       One thing that's very different is that most movies from the early half of the 20th century were shot on soundstages or studio backlots due to technical and budgetary reasons.  And some early movies were adapted from live theater plays, and retain their "stageiness" when adapted to film.  The tradition from silent films to sound also tended to lock down the camera, so cinematography became more "stagey."

       @darulharb I like some of the movies on TCM. I highly recommend Laura as well. Gene Tierney is stunning in this movie.
