@johl Mastodon is wonderful, but please note that it is part of a massive open source volunteer-run network that has scaled up to millions of people. The #fediverse contains alternatives to nearly every kind of platform you can think of, and they all use a common protocol to communicate.

Linux, Wikipedia, Mastodon. All of them built by strange, intrinsically motivated people. All of them are full of problems and flaws that are hard and maybe impossible to fix. But at the end of the day, these things help us and keep the wonders of the Internet alive, because they come out of a deep understanding that humanity needs giving more than taking.

@johl And still people run around and claim that nobody would work anymore if there were a universal basic income as if this were a law of nature.Imagine hating your job so much that it makes you overlook the obvious.

@hllizi @johl Well its true in the aggregate. Of course some will work because they enjoy it, but a big group of people will not work because work for them is shitty and dehumanizing. In sweden, in many government department, the job is like UBI. You have no requirements to perform anything. What happens? Enormous inefficiency, people sleeping on the job, or playing computer games, and that is why the public sector is so inefficient. This would spread and soceity would collapse (...)

@hllizi @johl with UBI. Not to speak of the fact that it is financially impossible and ethically horrible to make a set of people, other peoples slaves. The only way it _might_ work is if you change universal to _not_ universal, and set the income level at close to starvation levels to encourage people to actually work. But you would have to limit the non UBI to a small set of people to make it work.

@johl The great thing is that as long as there are alternatives and the source code is open, it does't matter if the projects are not perfect!I mean take wikipedia, some sections are very socialist, but nobody is forcing me to use it. I can use brittanica or the library instead if I want. =)

@hllizi @johl Wow.... that must be one of the most civilized ways of saying "agree to disagree" that I've ever seen on Mastodon! Respect!

@sean Yes, and Wikipedia is just one of many projects of the Wikimedia movement, along with Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata and many more. As for Linux, what people are referring to as Linux is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I've recently taken to calling it, GNU plus Linux. Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system etc etc

@johl @sean Which is where we see one of the problems with these kinds of projects: They were *initiated* by strange, intrinsically motivated people and loads of other people then helped buiding an maintainig them aswell as the environmen that makes them what they are. Yet, most of the narratives focus on the "strang geniuos" thas singlehandedly made X.

@h4890 @hllizi @johl perhaps if their work wouldn't be shitty and dehumanizing they wouldn't act like that? Or if the pay reflected the importance and how unpleasant the work is, then motivated people would take the job instead of desperate ones. As it stands, the most important and hardest jobs are often paid and respected the least. We can't expect good results if the main motivation to work is fear of having no income.#universalbaseincome #taxtherich

@lazurski @hllizi @johl Of course we can. It all starts in freedom of the individual. If people do not need to do that, it means you make other people their slaves. On top of that it would be financially completely unfeasible and UBI (in the widest sense of the word, where the words mean what they say) has been disproven.
