@leo @ChrisPirillo From what I've read, it supports the Mastodon.social instance.

@ChrisPirillo That's a donation to the Mastodon developers and their instances. (And they definitely deserve it.) And since you're on mastodon.social it helps pay for your instance, too.I just hope people don't think it provides any support to the 4998 other instances that are getting slammed right now. Nor does it pay for any of the upstream devs on ActivityPub, etc. This is my problem with centralized mechanisms like joinmastodon.org. They only represent a fraction of the Fediverse.

@leo ...oh, definitely not. I'd expect *each* instance owner to have their own funding campaign. I hadn't honestly explored JoinMastodon.org much (seemed higher level than what I was looking for), but I do wonder if that's an unintentional oversight - or if there would be a better way to push people outward to 'n' instances beyond? Maybe a wiki, with moderation?

@ChrisPirillo Their heart is in the right place - and it's good to have the server pledge - but there are a lot of instances like mine that aren't listed because we want to avoid an onslaught of random members.I think many people new to Mastodon still have a little of the "centralized" mindset so figure Mastodon.social and Joinmastodon.org are "official."So I wonder if I tried to fund raise here I bet a lot of people would say "oh, I already support the Mastodon patreon."

@leo ...I have zero doubt they'll show up for you. Just needs to be explained, and perhaps costs made transparent? The centralized mindset is something I'm actively battling, but people have been *trained* to think that way. Your audience is different (in your favor, more technical).

@ChrisPirillo I'm not worried for myself. It costs $358/month to run the instance (not charging for the 5-8 hours a day I'm spending moderating!) But it's part of the overall community (like our forums, IRC, etc.) And as you taught me, community is key!I do worry about the other little guys who are suddenly seeing huge server bills. I've been running this for three years and I'm just blown away by what's happening. It was a ghost town until three weeks ago.

@leo @ChrisPirillo Does there need to be a non-profit foundation or United Nations of Mastodon to support a better server directory/lookup mechanism? A good lookup might show SW version, # of users, age, geo location, (primary) language, area of interest/description and active topics for each + have a browse and keyword search function. Finding the right community seems to be a big part of making the local feed successful.

@leo @ChrisPirillo the only good thing Elon has achieved in the past few weeks is to remind us all that social networks aren't all bad, and that we need to continue to have a place to engage with one another long after he's done destroying the old place

@leo @ChrisPirilloSpeaking as someone with years of we server management experience, I also worry that many people starting their own instances don't fully appreciate how bad things could get if they don't have Mastadon configured to take advantage of their hardware or how large spikes in traffic can cause chaos when a server is not ready to handle it.It would be best, I believe for more people to be running smaller servers for their own groups of friends, family and colleagues.

@leo @ChrisPirillo My biggest hurdle was finding a server. The initial list all seemed to be closed to registrations or not really relevant. https://instances.social really helped me find a server.

@leo @ChrisPirillo there's talk among some about setting up a sort of group donation setup that would allow individuals to designate funds directly to their instance operator *or* more broadly across instances... not sure where that discussion stands currently, but I was talking to people about it earlier this week

@leo @mmasnick ...that's why I think it would be a great idea to have it in each instance onboarding. Explaining / setting context. Not necessarily leaving it up to each admin to figure out how to do, independently. Patreon is already too much of a disconnect, IMHO - but it's what people know.

@mmasnick @leo ...I think something *like* that would be a part of the default onboarding process, if only to aid in unlearning behavior and setting expectations. See this thread: https://mastodon.social/@ow@fireplace.cafe/109368577203027342

@leo @ChrisPirillo This is why I'm using my current host's instance as a starting point while I retrofit my #WordPress site for #IndieWeb and #ActivityPub. The #Fediverse is bigger than #Mastodon. https://mastodon.sdf.org/@mjgardner/109369212865424083

@leo @ChrisPirillo Where is the donate info on twit.social? It would be helpful if perhaps on settings there were a standard place to see how to donate for any server.

@leo @ChrisPirillo From what I’m seeing, there are under 30,000 patrons for the official instance + mastodon project.I’m with Leo — I think ActivityPub, Mastodon (the apps), and each instance that would like to accept donations should all be separate and be transparent with their costs. It would align with the spirit of this community from the beginning. A public page showing costs and donations.Instances shouldn’t be scared of some profits. Profits will provide sustainability.
