@sean One of my friends said she was flipping between accounts on different instances to follow different people because she doesn't know how to follow someone from a different instance from her home instance. I haven't tried to explain it to her yet, because I think she's given up on mastodon, but I know this isn't the first time I've seen someone confused about it. So that's def a topic to hit.

@sean I've been here for 5-6 years now on different servers. My advice is this:1. Slow down and let human connections happen organically2. Be comfortable changing servers, there's no obligation to stick to the first server you sign up for3. Check out third party apps, they might fit your use-case more

@sean kind of a pain to find people via just the web. Hashtag / topic search is server only? But users aren’t because they include the server. Then you find them and want to follow but if you’re on that person’s servers web app, it just gives you a link to copy paste. It’s just a bit rougher action flow.

@sean @deathkitten how to follow people on different servers, or even like/boost one of their posts, is definitely confusing. I figured it out probably because I’m a techie, but for the average person? They’re going to go “I don’t understand why it won’t just let me add them as a friend, this is stupid, I’m out”

@sean @Chirael I am 200% sure the only reason I adjusted to mastodon as quickly as I did is both my previous experience on diaspora and just the fact that I am a techie. The number of people I've been jumping in and explaining things to since the latest waves of max twitter exodus is crazy to me.

@sean I'd probably go into things with account migration and the differences between mastodon and the fediverse. The main source of anxiety I see is people not knowing what server to sign up for or having analysis paralysis.

@sean I don't understand, for example, if one can have multiple accounts (on multiple servers) and how. Some info on that would be useful. Or basic things, like how to 'like' a post
