By saying “trans friends and intersex friends,” not “trans friends and an intersex friend,” Stephen Fry is seriously claiming to have more than one friend who has a disorder of sexual development and is deeply upset with JK Rowling.Even one person like this would be remarkable. Because there are so many minor conditions that are classed as DSDs, I suppose Fry could have more than one, but why would a woman with PCOS be mad at JK Rowling?Probably, everyone in Stephen’s Fry “progressive” celeb set claims to be “deeply upset with JK Rowling.”He could have just as easily said, “I have white, male friends who are deeply upset with JK Rowling,” but the “intersex friends” seemed vaguely to have a characteristic he could use to give them some gravitas.Fry told podcast Beeb Watch that Ms Rowling is still a ‘friend’, but added: ’I have trans friends and intersex friends who are deeply upset by her.’https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-11444883/Stephen-Fry-reveals-trans-friends-deeply-upset-JK-Rowlings-stance-trans-issues.html

@Cousin_Isobel He's talking out of his ass his intersex friends are probably Irish dumpster version of Jessica Yaniv with multiple personality disorders who is intersex now because he sliced and dices his pp into sexless funny flaps.

@Cousin_Isobel Sounds like a them problem. Maybe some therapy to deal with the amount of influence a children's book author has on their lives. As far as I know JK hasn't voiced objections to people who deal with disorders of sexual development.

And, having confided in Fry about their condition, they've apparently given him authority to speak on their behalf about their distress at JKR not referring to them at all.I don't think she spoke about cancer patients, either.Maybe Fry could become their spokesperson about their feelings on every JKR non utterance about them?I'm sure everybody who delegates their authority to Fry to speak for them is representative of all people with these conditions. How can people like Fry (who's supposedly a great thinker) not see how reductive, patronising and wrong headed he is?Must be his ego's getting in the way?JKR's success, popularity, humour, grace, independence, visibility and intelligence really rub men like Fry up the wrong way, don't they? He's such a boring old nob head.

@hearthmoon Yes, I think he is very representational. He’s even supposed to be one of the “reasonable” ones, I think. To him, there is no actual truth – just the feeling of the loudest, whining people and what you’re “supposed” to say.

@Cousin_Isobel I’m sure you didn’t mean it this way, you were just drawing attention to the madness that is the TRA’s forced teaming attempts with people with DSDs, but PCOS is not a DSD, it’s an endocrine disorder of the FEMALE reproductive system - no ovaries, no PCOS.(Pre menopause I had PCOS. I am also of the sex that produces large, immobile gametes, as evidenced by my c-section scar!)

@EmmyNoether Actually, I did mean it and did think I was right that PCOS was classed as a DSD. However, I must admit that my only knowledge of this is from GC videos, pointing out that DSDs are sometimes minor conditions and rarely result in an ambiguous sexual presentation. If you’ve had it, you probably know that it isn’t classed as a DSD, though, so I believe you. Or, maybe it is in some countries and not others. Here in the U.S., my friend found out that her son’s slightly misshapen penis (hole in not quite the right spot) was classed as a DSD. It was corrected and he is fertile and, of course, male.

@Cousin_Isobel @EmmyNoether TRAs class PCOS as a DSD in order to bulk up the % of people who have one, and because it’s evidence (to them) that sex is a spectrum: look, hairy women with high(er) testosterone, they must be partly male. This is, of course, bollocks.

@Cousin_Isobel No, what happened was that Anne Fausto Sterling tried to exagerate the percentage of DSDs (people born with ambiguous genitalia whose external genital appearance at birth is at odds with their karyotype), which is about 0.8% of the population or less, by including all sorts of other conditions which had sod all to do with DSDs, such as Kleinfelter’s (boy has XXY chromosomes, but still a boy) or Turner’s syndrome (girl with XO chromosomes, still a girl) or boys born with hypospadias (minor birth defect where the urethral opening is not at the tip of the penis but somewhere on the underside - approx 1 in 300 male births, this is what your friend’s son had) or PCOS (endocrine disorder of adult females and very, very definitely not a DSD).Don’t fall for the Fausto Sterling bullshit is the take-home message. It’s a political misrepresentation of the science to inflate the numbers and soften people up for the completely unscientific idea that “being trans” is some sort of “DSD of the brain” (which it isn’t).

@mittimithai @Cousin_Isobel What a pillock that woman is.In my case it was just a bit annoying when my periods stopped/were irregular as hell in my twenties. Some women have it worse than me.Re. androgens - women without PCOS have testosterone levels of about 1.5 nmol per litre. In women with PCOS it goes up to 2, 2.5. Men on the other hand have testosterone levels of 10 to 30 nmol per litre. There is pretty much no overlap between the two populations.Again, much misrepresentation of the actual science (and cherry picking of measurement techniques - testosterone in saliva is much more variable, and can go up and down depending on how recently you’ve exercised. Which is why the IOC takes blood tests to test for testosterone levels).

@Cousin_Isobel I had the symptoms of PCOS, but since doctors rarely do a lot of work helping women with it, I never got the diagnosis. OB GYN handed me a packet of hormones that made me so angry I almost got fired.I’m not mad at JKR. I do think doctors need to do more research into understanding female conditions. And if Fry or anyone else called any woman I know who has a genuine DSD a man, or not a woman, they’d be both hurt and angry.

It's also important to note that all DSDs are sex specific. Only males get certain DSDs, only females get other DSDs. (I guess the one exception is CAH, but it is still highly sex-specific in its effects)There is no "in between" sex in mammals.

@Marvin @Cousin_Isobel Absolutely. It’s all about what sort of gamete you would have produced had your body followed the correct pathway to the end. 5ARD, PAIS, CAIS all happen in individuals with XY chromosomes.5ARD is a particularly odd one, because having failed to develop male looking genitalia in utero due to an absence of dihydrotestosterone in utero, they then go through a male puberty at the normal age with enlargement of the penis (which may have been misidentified as an abnormally large clitoris at birth) and their (internal) testes start to produce sperm. (Individuals with 5ARD may be subfertile, but that’s probably mainly down to the fact that being internal, their testes are simply too warm for optimum sperm viability). It’s also why 5ARD causes particular problems for women’s sports because what you have are individuals who, to all intents and purposes, are physiologically men (albeit with internal testes) with all the performance advantages that male puberty conveys, just with “female” on their birth certificate. (A genuine case of being “wrongly assigned at birth.”) Semenya and Nionsaba fall into this category. (Newspaper reports and TV interviews suggest that Semenya thought of himself as a boy, was quite happily living as a teen boy and playing sport as a teen boy until some sports coach spotted his birth certificate at about the age of 17 and said “hey, we’ve got an angle we can exploit here.”) Dutee Chand, who has CAIS and never went through male puberty despite having XY chromosomes poses less of a threat (except as the thin end of a wedge leading to Semenya et al.)But I still think the cleanest solution for women’s sport is chromosome testing (the vanishingly rare cases of translocation of the SRY gene onto an X-chromosome leading to individuals who are XX but go through male puberty I think are genuinely lost in the statistical noise). Chromosome testing, incidentally, is less invasive than a blood or urine test. All it takes is a cheek swab.

@LostInCalifornia @Cousin_Isobel As someone with one ovary thanks to PCOS, I’m more upset at TRAs that try to use PCOS as “proof” that sex isn’t binary or whatever. Sure it can affect a woman’s appearance but it doesn’t mean she’s going to grow a dick and balls.

@Marvin @Cousin_Isobel The other respect in which TRAs abuse science to push a political agenda is with this myth they push that “no-one actually knows their karyotype unless they’ve been tested.”If you have obviously male or obviously female genitalia at birth and you go through all the tanner stages of puberty (including starting to ejaculate if male, or starting to menstruate if female) then you know, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you are XY or XX respectively (barring, as I mentioned in the last post, the almost vanishingly rare condition of an SRY translocation error).

@tangleofsnakes @LostInCalifornia I used to hang out at a bar where a woman with a beard hung out, and it didn’t cross my mind for a second that she was anything other than a woman with a beard. I didn’t know the name of the medical cause (in retrospect, possibly PCOS), but it was obvious that this was a female person.
