The problems with running your own instance when you're somebody like me is you never stop tinkering with itI've gone back to Pleroma FE (develop branch) and it does feel much snappier than what I was using... hmm, maybe I'll switch the backend around again

@paul can you point me to some guide on taking an instance up? I think I have resources and will power to try it.

@rjasmin Sure, I've got a few Pleroma scripts for podman (a drop in replacement for docker) in my codeberg repo:Pleroma: https://codeberg.org/pswilde/pleroma-podmanRebased: https://codeberg.org/pswilde/rebased-podmanAkkoma: https://codeberg.org/pswilde/akkoma-podman(they're all Pleroma, with little tweaks)Mastodon also has an installation guide on the joinmastodon.org website I think. And I think Misskey has some decent docker images as well

@paul thanks. I have a VPS running ubuntu. OTOH, Oracle cloud has a decent free plan, has anyone tried those?

@rjasmin Haven't tried them myself, but I'd be cautious over the free tier - it's probably shared processing time and available bandwidth. You should probably be looking to pay about £$€10-ish a month really. Probably possible on less than that, but the key thing to remember is there'll end up being a lot of network processes out to other servers, so you really want to make sure your tier has enough bandwidth and monthly allowance to allow for that (on a free tier you could get limited by fair-use policies for example)

@paul I am talking about this: https://www.oracle.com/cloud/free/ Both arhitectures are interesting, for different reasons..

@paulI think the #Pleroma web Site has a decent howto Install as Well.At least I could follow it and installed it in a #LXC Container.@rjasmin

@paul Hi - many thanks for your podman scripts. Got my instance working. Just a few things I had to tweak which you may add to help others. 1) I had to put docker.io/ infront of the image names (as now podman doesn't by default search it). 2) The generated config file gets put into a subfolder /var/lib/pleroma/config which isn't mounted - so had to exec into the container and copy it out.

@m Hi, glad you found the scripts helpful. Thanks for pointing out the slight quirks. The docker.io thing is normal for podman, you can actually just add docker.io to /etc/containers/registries.cong > unqualified-search-registries, my disto has that by default so I often forget it - I can correct it in the scripts though to help others out, thanks! The config file one is odd, I thought I had worked around that. I'll check up on it and correct what I find - thanks again!

Thanks for making these, very useful. I am in the process of migrating my instance from AWS to my own server and debating if I should start using Podman. I only plan on hosting Rebased/Soapbox, a Jekyll blog and perhaps a couple of Wordpress blogs in the future. Is it even worth it to bother with Podman? I've never used it (or Docker), so any insight would be appreciated.

@chemahey, you're welcome. I'm glad they're actually helpful! There's certainly no reason to require a container (podman or docker), but I prefer it for a few reasons - you don't need to fuss about dependencies - it gives a sort of isolated protection (gaining access to the container won't necessarily compromise the whole system) - and it makes it really portable (copy the data elsewhere, spin up the podman image and away you go).I normally run a really minimal host system, and run everything else in containers purely because it makes the rebuild and repair much easier if anything bad was to happen :-)

Wow, those are great reasons. I was unaware about the security benefits. I am sold! I will try to use pods for the new server. Thanks again!

@chema Great! I should say it's not a foolproof or "official" security method, an attacker could potentially launch a new attack from the container itself, but still, it's better than nothing. Plus, given a container is ephemeral, you can easily just destroy the compromised one and run a new clean version in seconds.
