i could post in one of the many Norwegian dialects (which don't have official written forms, but people make them up anyway when they text) and virtually every Norwegian speaker would understand it, but that the machine translators would get extremely confused.

@alyx it got confused because i wrote "til" as dialectal "te", so it thought i meant "tea" instead of to/for.then it confused the dialectal spelling of "meddag" (officially "middag", meaning dinner) for "afternoon" somehow...that sentence is supposed to be "shall we have Thorwegian/cod for dinner?"

@thor Wow... Well, I don't think it's a surprise translate software don't recognize dialects. It's mostly gonna be trained on the main language. At most you can expect for it to know regional synonyms for various words, but any word that is just a slight variation in spelling is gonna be ignored in the algorithm's learning phase. Out of curiosity, are the proper words for tea and afternoon in any way close to "te" and "meddag", in terms of spelling?

@pieceofthepie i wish there was a thing that popped up before proceeding to post that asks me to check "did you set the language correctly?" if it detects nonsense for the language that was picked.

@pieceofthepie i can't offer the translation feature in Mastodon to users of my instance because i'm from the wrong country. i need a credit card from an EU country and Norway is not in the EU, so DeepL won't let me create an account for the API.

@alyx mmmthe official spelling for tea is indeed "te" (long "teehh" sound) - so fair enough, i get why it didn't understand that oneettermiddag is afternoonmiddag *can* mean mid-dayand ettermiddag could be mistranslated as after-mid-dayso, there is some semantic connection there, but it's a bit far fetched.

@thor The reason I asked, is cause I think it tried to latch on to context. See, when it saw "tea", it knew from the British context that tea is drunk in the afternoon. So, because it saw tea there, and you were translating to English, it thought that "dinner" was an attempt to describe a later time in the day, when one could have tea. Which in the English context is obviously the afternoon. It completely ignored "dinner" being about a meal, and took it as a rough approximation of a time in the day.

@alyx these language models use "senses of meaning" these days. they encode it as N-dimensional vectors for the neural networks.so you can sorta imagine them picking out where in space a word exists, and then spitting out the word that exists in the same spot in another language.but in this case, it lacked sufficient data, so it wasn't able to locate that spot precisely.
