The reason I’m looking at alternatives to Mastodon, such as GotoSocial and Pleroma, is that I might want to host my own instance, but I’m weary of the pretty huge stack which Mastodon requires.Here’s what appears to be a good list of the main differences between M and P for those of us currently using Mastodon, and the main one is “fewer requirements, slimmer hardware”.https://blog.soykaf.com/post/what-is-pleroma/

@jpmens thanks for running ahead on this, I did run mastodon for just me a few years ago, and it gave me no bother. But I suspect the expanding fediverse might challenge that quite soon.

@feld @mattbee @jpmens I am new to this discussion, but it seems true that several of the "Featured Instances" on the Pleroma home page are viewed by many as servers that better be banned. At least by people, *I* respect. E.g. @mwlucas writes "I discovered that Pleroma seems to be the server of choice for TERFs, racists, and related jerks. @clacke @feld @mwlucas @mattbee @jpmens @utrenkner Well, Gab and Truth Social decided to be centralised instances so they don't federate with anyone else last I checked so people don't realise this. Some of the instances people block that used pleroma don't exist now. I just think it is a cultural clash that shouldn't have extended to software. Software is software... and it can't be that if people shy away from using it due to other instance associations. I would also argue that Gab and Truth Social are worse instances to be associated with if you have this mentality.
