       With #twitter burning in spectacular fashion, I've resigned myself to not-so-quietly mentioning Mastodon to anyone over there who will listen.We don't need Twitter, its algorithm, and its ridiculous new management.        @LPTVLive Can you explain how mastodon works to the tech illiterate? I’m not understanding all the server stuff. I mean I know what a server is I don’t know which ones to join I don’t know what my local server is versus any other server. I am completely confused

       @levantinenative I can try!IRC - Internet Relay Chat - is a chat network that uses multiple servers, each connected to each other to form a larger network, and that network distributes the same content. So, a US EFNet server and an EU EFNet server would all still share the same channels.Same here: It's a Twitter-like service on that same multi-server concept.

       @levantinenative Yep! And it's all curated by you - not an algorithm. You can use hashtags to find things you're interested in, and then follow accounts that you find accordingly. If you'd like a generalized feed, you can pick "Local" for your server's latest toots, or "Federated" for the larger Mastodon network. Turn on slow mode if you do try that one, it can fly by pretty fast!
