Let's be real, there are already people trying to colonize the fuck out of this place. From corporate account services on hachyderm to CEOs suggesting forks of Mastodon with zero federation capabilities to plans for cheap providing services for companies to scraping profiles for data verification, there are people carving out plans for this space that fly against the original intentions.I still stand by my beliefs that the fediverse is for everybody. But, I also wonder about how soon we'll perpetuate the Tragedy of the Commons once more, as the morons with zero self-awareness at the heads of tech companies decide to go all in on fucking with things they will never understand or care about.

@sean there is no tragedy of the commons, its a tragedy of alienation of exploitation.

@sean i'm loving the reactions of people to the colonization efforts. the trolling and culture jamming is giving me life rn. the more hostile we are the better. course, that won't stop them trying to work around the resistance. at least if we can avoid being disrupted, we can live another day.

@sean >perpetuate the Tragedy of the Commons i'm sorry. i have to push back on this."Tragedy of the Commons" is storytelling designed to prop up the institution of private property and capitalism. don't give it any credibility.

@bigMouthCommie What I meant was how corporations regularly exploit the Commons for their own benefit.

@sean What do you feel on the optimum speed to xfer users from Twitter to Fediverse to achieve exit velocity in non-corporate social mass? Is that even realistic? There's culture shock & server capacity & limited mod time etc on 1 hand. But on the other, maybe more minds should be freed, before they spin up: Join the new thing! Our Mastodont servers at pallantir.social !! etc

@ArtBear I don't know, it's hard to say. The fediverse has the potential to destroy all walled garden platforms and offer suitable replacements. Generally, the user surge is positive, but this time it's way larger, and it would appear that many people are less willing to learn the culture and conventions of what came before. This is every Eternal September, in a nutshell, but for us this wave marks one of the biggest migrations yet.

@sean i'm ok with this as a temporary solution.ultimately, every corporation who wants space in the fediverse should be hosting their own server. i understand for smaller companies this service might have a long-term use.and its so easy to block a domain. if you don't want to see any business communiques, use the block button.

@bigMouthCommie While I somewhat agree, my larger concern is the corporatization of instances themselves, rather than some companies just running their own PR nodes.

@bigMouthCommie @sean tragedy of the commons was always an issue with federated networking. please don't misconstrue this.

@bigMouthCommie @sean more clearly, this is a social issue regarding how various service providers (ISPs, email/xmpp/nntp/what have you servers, and now fediverse instances) managing their users according to different policies can cause damage to the rest of the network

@opal wrong. it was always a story told to prop up capitalist interests. people tend to the commons. private interests exploit the commons.

@bigMouthCommie @sean the original concern was about ISPs / ASes allowing their users to ddos and spam the rest of the network with no barrier

@opal can you expand on that because i don't understand it. you gotta unpack how managing users according to disparate policies can damage the rest of the network.

@opal then all traffic from those ip blocks goes to /dev/null.done.a little litigation should get the attention of the relevant admins, too.

@bigMouthCommie >can you expand on thatgladly, and i'll clarify because i just re-read https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons and notice it includes etymology going far back as the 19th century. when i said "the original concern", take that to mean "for when this term started to be used in the computing industry" because they are separate concepts: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tragedy_of_the_commons#Tragedy_of_the_digital_commonsbasically it comes down to resources such as bandwidth being limited by the networking equipment that's used to carry its users' traffic>then all traffic from those ip blocks goes to /dev/null.this *is* the answer, but the only way for this to work, is if all ISPs cooperate on this (and add effective egress filtering). which is actually obstensibly more difficult in reality due to any AS having multiple peers going out to the internet, and ISPs' usual disdain for depeering anyone

@moth i agree to an extent, but the other half of it is the genuine lack of knowledge about how it's applied to ISPs and federated networks

The incentive to trade. Online, offline. Same. They want to sell stuff, scam, deceive, promote. Same story over and over again. Nothing will change under this system of trade. And yes, I noticed too. I run several federated networks.

@tio @sean >They want to sell stuff, scam, deceive, promote.i like to think that fedi is not really made up of their consumer market, so if that's what they go for, i'm gonna laugh when it doesn't work. horrible advertising platform here, for good reason: advertising does not work on informed people

Tell that to them. I am flooded with bullshit accounts for all sorts of corporations who want to join to advertise...Yes right now the fediverse does not seem to be a great place to sell shit, but the more people join, the more likely these corporations would join and find ways to sell their stuff.
