@tinker if you had $500 and wanted to do something #Solarpunk that was beneficial to your community, what would you do? What about $5000?

@Iaintshootinmis - Oh dang... that's a good question. I'll tag @hydroponictrash in this as well as he has great experience and very pragmatic and workable ideas. So the question is priority and relative ROI.I tend to treat immediate needs and then build out to address systemic needs. I personally like food issues. So for $500 dollars, I would buy bulk food and distribute it out for an immediate need. For $5000 I would build out a hydroponic NFT system that would feed more folks in the long term and distribute it out each grow cycle. #solarpunk #mutualAid

@tinker @hydroponictrash First, thanks for hte response. Second, this is interesting. We wen't with the pantry/food option as well. We keep a pantry of 20~ specific canned goods on hand at all times. And keep a minimum of a dozen at a time. This has allowed us to shore ourselves up for natural disaster, personal economic hardships, and to operate s a sort of food pantry. We built it over a period of weeks by spending ~$10 a pay period (Cans are around .60c-.75c/pc) . We also keep track of each can we use so that we're constantly replenishing stock and its obviously more sustainable to buy 1 can of X than to wait until we've depleted a stock. This has not only gotten our family through some rough times, but has allowed us to split stock with others in need and help them remain food secure when they were otherwise in an economic hardship. I keep a larger list on my website of everything in our pantry. We keep a large stock of rice, flours, salt, sugars, liqours/wines, and oils as well. All with associated uses. For anyone reading, the previous long form is at the link, but a quick list to get anyone started is here. - Corn - Green Beans- Black Beans- Kidney Beans- Whole New Potatoes- Diced Tomatoes - Garbanzo Beans- Cabbage- Spinach- Collard Greens - Beets- Diced Peaches - Black Eyed Peas- Peas- Sauerkraut - Canellini/White Beans- Pinto Beans - Sliced Mushroomshttps://www.justinmcafee.com/2018/10/food-list.html

@tinker @hydroponictrash second though, I'm not in disagreement with your plan, but I would have thought water or solar would have been the next plan. I'm not familiar with the Nutrient Film Techniques. Sounds super scifi. Is this like soylent green is people? Or more like Nutritional Yeast Flakes?

@Iaintshootinmis @hydroponictrash So the big things I focus on in solarpunk / mutual aid / post-scarcity are these:FoodWaterShelterHealthcareTransportationEducationYou asked me what I would do with a limited amount of funds... I would pick one and dive into it, as opposed to spread it thinly across all things. Now, there comes a time when those initiatives have enough people and resources to back them that you can turn your attention to the next thing, but we were discussing limited funds. For instance, we have - right now - post-scarcity Education. We have libraries. We have the internet. It is free and downloading a free text does not take from someone else pragmatically (legality is another discussion). Not everyone has access to them and they need to be maintained and can certainly be improved... but it exists. Many places also have clean freely accessible water. Not everywhere, by no means, but there are lots of places that do. It needs to be maintained & improved and in places that don't have it, implemented.Shelter is needed. I don't know how to approach that. Tents and sleeping bags, coats, sure, but I don't know how to approach the systemic issues personally. Though folks are and I try and support them as I can.I love transportation and public transit. That is a community effort that requires taxing and coordination. I do this in my day job. It is my passion. I love it.So for me, at a personal level, I then focus on Food. How to feed myself, my family, my friends, my neighbors and the greater community. - That's my current push. #solarpunk #mutualAid #PostScarcity

@tinker @Iaintshootinmis @hydroponictrash thank you for this thread and discussion! Seeing #solarpunk and #mutualaid collide in my feed is delightful. My unasked for answer at the $500 level would be to focus on restocking our local network of community refrigerators or other smaller community-maintained pantries. At the $5000 level, I’d want to not give an off-the-cuff answer.

@duane @tinker @Iaintshootinmis @hydroponictrash this was such a pleasant thread to find. the defcon darknet folks were inspired by the books daemon and freedom(tm) by Daniel Suarez with "holons" as the individual community cells. it's more so fleshed out in freedom, but daemon is still a fun tech thriller. I read them over a decade ago and I still think about it and how to make that real life.starts with getting to know your neighbors, I think :)

@7thdrxn @duane @Iaintshootinmis @hydroponictrash - I imagine you're right. So much starts with getting to know the folks around you.

@tinker @7thdrxn @duane @hydroponictrash the first rule of #MutualAid (as taught by our local #SolarPunk group ) is "Meet Your Neighbors" People hate it, but its a great chance to meet those around you, identify potential mutual aid partners, and to figure out who you may want to defederate from as it were.
