What's the best new/used laptop/chromebook KEYBOARD on something small to mostly just type on 99% of the time (not even on internet)... ????? Old thinkpad? cheap new chromebook? Oh, that'll run a *BSD... required. Net, Free, Open, one of those.

@Coyote I really like the #ThinkPad X220 keyboard. If you prefer the newer chicklet style keys, the X230 has that. I do a lot with #chromebook laptops and I like them, but keyboards are not as good and you'll have to flash #coreboot to it (which can be quite a process). I've done that many times to several different Chromebook models. I haven't yet done it one of the of "ThinkPad" Chromebooks.

@Coyote Battery life is excellent on the Chromebook #corebootbook laptops, though. I really like them for that. I use one for my work road trips. I like the Dell Chromebook 11 keyboard better than the Acer C740's keyboard that I am using now. But the performance is better on the C740, so that was one reason for the switch. The other reason is that I'm testing out different #corebootbook models.

@retroedgetech I had a X200, and several X300 Thinkpads, I honestly like the X300 best, I know it's a weird drive, and it's a crappy CPU and graphics, but the size and feel of the keyboard is about the best I've ever seen on a laptop. I'm half tempted to find someone to fix one of my old X300's up a bit. Couple still run, they just overheat in like 12 min of use... I'll have to look at chromebooks... Hrm...

@Coyote The X300 is a great model. I really wanted one when they first came out. I think I now have one in my collection of computers, or a similar X301. It's not in fully working order, but I think it boots. I can sell Chromebooks converted to #corebootbook laptops. Will be giving one away to a random subscriber of my substack after it reaches 100 subscribers.

@retroedgetech I had ThinkPad T60. Best keyboard I ever typed. X230 chicklet style keyboard and T470's are good too, but I miss context menu button.I tried X230 classic keyboard but It's not so good in terms of typing expiriebce. Layout is good, but the buttons itself are not, not like on T60. Probably because it's a copy, not original keyboard (I ordered it in online shop). It's better to use local shops when it comes to buying original ThinkPad parts from guys that disassemble laptops and sells parts from them.@Coyote

@Coyote If you don't need performance, you could go for a Thinkpad X61. That's the oldest X-Series with 64 bit CPU, so OS support in the future is not in question. OpenBSD and Linux run great on that. The keyboard is slightly better (in my opinion) than the one of the X220 and it is a little smaller. The performance is a lot less than on the X220, but so is usually the price (in Germany usually 30-50€ for X61 and 150-200€ for X200, given both are in best condition).(Writing this on one.)

You can also get big chungus T60 with 4:3 display. They can come with 32bit CPU but it's swappable.BUT T60's have only SATA I speed and 3 Gb of RAM is maximum. On *61 models (not sure about X61, but T61 does) you can get SATA II speed and 8 Gb DDR2 RAM limit unlock (instead of 3 (?) Gb) with Middletorn BIOS mod.*60 series ThinkPad are Corebootable, but *61 are not (if you in that sort of thing)@doxanthropos @Coyote

@Evv1L @doxanthropos Some of these ideas are really interesting. Maybe I should just send out a couple of the X300 ThinkPads to someone to clean up, referb a bit. I think one had 8G and that weird SSD was like 250G? I really like it, it's just that it overheats now so quickly when I run it. It's rockin' a nice OpenBSD install, one of my better dwm/neovim/st configured minimalist installs... Hmm... If anyone knows anyone that does motherboard layout for a X300, I'd bet that would be a terror with like quad (4ea) RK3399s or something each with 8G RAM and eMMC of like 64G each? quad-quad core, your own cluster in a laptop with a killer keyboard, developer paradise? I mean, no one would suspect it in that body, and that keyboard rocked... mouse pad sucks though.

@astatine @doxanthropos @verita84 Now I just want to get the X300 fixed... Like, maybe I can find someone who will take all four (one cracked screen x300, two overheating X300, x200 that had water spilled, no idea level of damage was libreboot) and does that kind of work, and needs parts? And Just get two of the x300's rocking maxed, cleaned and not overheating, and keep the rest for parts? There's a guy on YouTube that does that kind of shit I think? Trip Code or something? @northern_dude @Evv1L @Coyote Yes, the #ThinkPad T420 is a cable laptop (depending on your needs). Still runs Windows 10 Pro on it well, but I recommend upgrading to 16GB memory and an SSD. Of course, it will work much better with #linux or #bsd, which is what I assume you will be using.

@Evv1L @retroedgetech @northern_dude Yes, 1, the keyboard is far superior to anything in production now, IMHO. and 2, you can put "blob-free" bios on it, and other security mods.. so, that's way better. and 3, come on man, it's got "420" in the name... what more could you want?

@Evv1L @northern_dude @retroedgetech I still think a custom board with a cluster of rockchip processors (actual cluster on same board) in the X300 would be fun. Like the pinebook, with 2-4 extra cpu's hard wired together (onboard "hub" so to speak, without the wires).
