My gf and me are both 29 now and soon to be 30 :blobcatscared: But more and more often we're discussing adoption at some point when things are ready for it instead of having a kid of 'our own' 🤔 It seems like a good idea

@stux Good luck! I'm going to be 38 next month. My 30s were a lot better than my 20s and it seems like a lot of people feel that way. So, something to look forward to! :)

@stux Adoptie is mooi. Maar dan zou ik wel al beginnen. Hoop testen, hoop geld, hoop instanties en in het ergste geval kunnen jullie jezelf over 10 jaar ouders noemen. Maar het is wel heel mooi om te adopteren als je geduld hebt.

@stux I grew up in foster care. I wish someone would have adopted me. That being said, you have to love that child like it's your own, no matter what. No situation should cause you to disown them regardless of their age!

@stux Earth hosts already 8 billion people. How many can it sustain? Each has a considerable environmental footprint and needs to be fed. Can all that be done while also leaving some nature? And apart from that, there are already so many children without parents. I find it an excellent idea of you.

@stux ♥️ this! My wife and I are awaiting a connection with a birth mother ourselves. I would recommend finding an organization that provides training for those interested in adoption. We found a local group that put on a two-day seminar to walk us through the vocabulary, legal aspects, emotional support, and perspectives from adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents. Very enlightening and only solidified our desire to move forward. We even did a home study with the organization.

@stux I’m all for adoption instead of having kids, we are already 8 billion, thousands of kids need parents, why bring more when you can achieve the same goal ‘having kids’ while making someone’s life better? Wishing all the best to you and your gf#adopt

@michaelperrigo @stux I can't imagine that anyone adopting a kid wouldn't love it as their own, it's why they chose to bring a kid into their life. One of my aunts couldn't have kids, adopted 5. They were never 'the adopted kids' or 'adopted cousins.' They were her (and uncle's) kids and our cousins. We al l knew they were adopted, but it was just a passing fact that really didn't change family dynamics.

@stux As a husband to an adoptee I’d suggest hanging out a bit on adult adoptee forums on the internet a bit. It’ll give you an idea of how complex adoption can be on many different levels. Better to go into it informed. The information from parents isn’t the whole story.

@stux In my mind it never came up to have children. The concept of a childwish was simply never there. So i concluded it would be better not to expose children to such a parent. But if i would have wanted children, i would definitely have opted for adoption.

@stux I have one of my own, but if I were ever to have another, I'd adopt. There are enough children who need loving homes that bringing in any more than one of my own verges on irresponsible and destructive in my mind.

@stux Adoptive mom here, from the USA. Adopted our son from China. No idea how domestic adoption works in Netherlands, but be aware that a lot of international adoption requires the couple to be infertile. Some countries also have prohibitions against people with certain health concerns or even who weigh too much. You are making yourself vulnerable to all kinds of bigotry-be prepared.
