Has anyone played Factorio? Trying the demo rn and wondering if it's worth buying. I'm playing it on the Switch, but feel like a PC kinda game... :doomthinking:

@entreprecariat I haven't, but I've played Mindustry, which I guess is quite similar. Liked it a lot.I also came across this and have been meaning to try it: https://www.lexaloffle.com/bbs/?tid=30631

@entreprecariat Factorio is how I survived my two first years of high school. A great game, and a game that my friends and I sometimes dive into for a couple of weeks.Only ever played it on a PC with a mouse. I tried it on a laptop but the trackpad isn't very user-friendly.

@entreprecariat on switch I have no idea. On PC I've finished. It's definitely worth it. It's still the first reference for automation games despite being a bit old.

@entreprecariat also I used it to teach process design, you might find it interesting for it's pedagogic value

@entreprecariat I didn't invest a lot of time but it's pretty cool and has some fun progression. It gets tough having to refactor an entire factory though to sort out a little optimization though. Also idk how it stacks up to others value and smoothness-wise, like satisfactory or even minecraft mods (which get close to the same gameplay loop).

@entreprecariat It's really good, quite complicated and a lot of fun - if you are into building, optimizing, automating.I've spent a good part of the first pandemic winter building an ever growing factory with some friends. It can really suck you in.But I was increasingly frustrated about the only interaction possible with the aliens on the planet you are destroying: "kill". They may have added "harvest" in a later version, but surprisingly that did not help against the colonizer vibe. And also: I can't imagine the game on the switch, tbh.

@tobbsn @entreprecariat the colonialist vibe is a basic of almost all automation games. I've been thinking about writing an article on this subject for years.

@chobeat @tobbsn didn't Paolo Pedercini focus on this aspect in some of his writing?

@entreprecariat@chobeat I had a rant with some alternative ideas for the game on my old instance - so if anybody wants to make a mod: https://cybre.space/@tobbsn/106046724566004462Another game called Infinifactory actually turned the colonial automation concept on its head: There you work in and build the weapons factories for your alien colonial overlords.

@tobbsn @chobeat what if the fact that is colonialist is a good thing? Because it shows that extractivism and colonialism are linked?

@entreprecariat @tobbsn it doesn't seem to involve any criticism. Some like Satisfactory actually glorify the act without even a hint of irony.

also: I'm bad at this. It turns out that designer != engineer
