@ThaMunsta @xkcd Which ones ? "Central server" is a weird term. I guess he means "On big server" ; but at the end Mastodon and IRC are both server-centered ; as opposite to what allows something like bitorrent.

@otyugh I mean if discord counts as user run instances, my self hosted Mastodon instance surely must count. It's not like my discord server required me to copy an entire code repository locally and code execution before it was "my instance" right? But ya central server is a big if a weird term. I figured federation counted as not really needing a central server.

@xkcd What? How does Discord have "user-run instances" but Mastodon doesn't?Also Reddit doesn't have user run instances. I know there is "clone" software, but that's not the same as actual reddit.IRC doesn't require a central server? Did someone extend it to use DNS-SD and mDNS or something? Searching isn't turning up anything.this just seems under-researched and wrong...

@xkcd I have a Cybiko! It's in the other room. I got one when they came out (as a Christmas present). I only ever saw one other person show up as a person I could communicate with. I think that was just because I was near Best Buy and they probably had a demo unit. It was a cool idea, but it never took off.

@xkcd I think there's a misconception on the meaning of each group:User-run instances is referring to users being able to administrate their own instance. An instance is a virtual construct which the user owns. Has nothing to do with who owns the underlying hardware.Central server means that everything is handled by one server. It has nothing to do with who owns it, only that a specific server is required for the service to work.
