The greatest thing about Mastodon, so far, in my short time here, is a great, calm energy of the ideas. I don't sense a lot of hatred or heat. The exchange of ideas is the point. It feels like the early days of the internet -- I've been here since 1994 -- when you found a place to make new friends and create meaningful connections. I know that early lift doesn't always last long with magnitude of distribution, but it's still good to know these moments still exist somewhere. #Mastodon #Internet

@boles have you tried being on an instance that federates?

@neo I'm new here, and I'm not sure what that means. Aren't all Mastodon servers Federated?

@boles I recommend doing some research on #fediblock, because yes, mastodon instances do federate, but most admins subscribe to blocklists that any moron can add instances to with 0 verification

@neo Are you telling me I'm blocked, or something? I did do some research and this server I'm on now seemed to be fast and well admin'd. Do you have any specific suggestions of where I might go instead?

@boles No, I'm suggesting that your instance probably blocks a lot of others. Not that Mastodon is transparent about blocks like Pleroma is by default.

@neo If I understood what you meant, I would try to solve this. How do I know if I'm getting blocked or not? Or is that not your point?

@boles That was partially my point. Generally the only thing mastodon users can do is ask their admin what the instance blocks....or look at the moderation account if there is one

@neo Is there one place I find these people to ask these questions?

@boles For a pleroma instance, the about page will have everything you need to know about the instance, including their instance policies. I legitimately do not know what a mastodon user can do other than ask their admin, unfortunately, I haven't used mastodon since the death of niu.moe
