I've only been a Mastodon admin for three years so forgive me for this. TIL I only need to follow people NOT on my Instance. I'll see everyone else automatically on the Local feed. Duh.#mastodon #tips

@leo So, you can't really curate your own feed as an admin?

@leo OTOH, my Home feed has fewer people in it than the local timeline, so I am less likely to miss posts on there since the feeds are chronological. So I still follow some local instance people.

@leo "I only need to follow people NOT on my Instance. I'll see everyone else automatically on the Local feed."But isn't that like trying to drink from the ocean... wait, from a mountain stream. No way to see everything in the Local timeline.

@leo this probably depends on your instance. If you're on a smaller one the local feeds are likely better, a larger instance and there's a lot of content coming your way. Similarly, if you are on a standalone instance it probably doesn't do much for you either :D

@leo Doesn’t matter if admin or user, doesn’t it? Everybody sees their fellow instance users on ‘local’. I still prefer curating my own feed independently of the instances.

@leo That makes sense, but following puts them in the home column. If you're using a mobile client (or any client with a narrower screen), and you want everything in one (home) page/column, you probably still want to choose who you want to follow, no?

@leoBut they might appreciate the follow anyway...?Perhaps it's not all about the practicality. 😉

@leo Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, but if you don't follow a local instance person, you won't see anything they Boost.. I believe Boosts only show up in the Home timeline, and they are only Boosts that have been boosted by someone you follow... I don't think I've ever seen a Boost in the Local timeline.

@leo But people will look to your follow list for discovery as to who they should follow. Since some folks have multiple accounts on several instances having you as a filter so newbies know which one is the best to follow (on twit.social) could be beneficial.

@leo Sure, but you may see their posts sooner if you follow them. They might be 50 posts down in the Local feed and right there on top of your Home feed.

@leo when I was briefly on the default mastadon server I searched for you and there are three old Leo accounts out there 😃

@leo I also think it's beneficial so other people on other instances might find more people from you if you follow them.

@leo that approach doesn’t work very well for instances with a lot of people. It’s not practically doable to keep up with the local feed on mastadon.social, never mind catching up after you’ve been gone for a few minutes.

@leo That's a good point, but I'm going to continue to follow folks from my local server, which gives me a more curated Home feed. I'm a big twitter lists user, and one of the things that helped keep twitter from being absolutely terrible was a "daily reading" list which was a more condensed group of active users who I wanted to see all of their posts, and not have them be lost in the larger feed.

@leo is following your instance a thing? How do I join twit social through a federated login? Long time fan. I watched Screensavers and have listened to Security Now weekly for many years 😁
