@ruud I wouldn't mind spinning up my own #Mastodon instance, but would like to understand the cost better before I jump in with both feet. Mastodon is open source, but what sort of hardware requirements am I looking at?

@herrmannpierre I think 6000 per year would be enough for now.But not everyone wants to / can donate. And not everyone needs to. Many people donate nothing, some even donated 100 EUR

@bcenclave That totally depends on a few things. For starters, how many users would you host. Then, even with 1 user, how many followers will you have. Also, if you interact with (boost/reply) accounts with many followers, that causes much load on your server.

@ruud then every fifth giving 1€/year would be sufficent for now, but I think the crowd is growing faster than the costs (at least I hope so)!
