I'm passing on a PC and want to reformat the drives with an arbitrary bit write so it's securely deleted. What's the cool kid way of doing this?

@josh If you can spare the shekels just replace the drive with something sensible and trash the old ones. Any process for secure rewriting will cost more of your time than the drive itself.

@josh I heard rubbing magnets over the drives are a solid method of formatting them. 🧲

@josh actually looks like dban died in 2015, use ShredOS for a more up to date thing

@josh dd if=/dev/urandom of=/dev/yourdrive bs<blocksize>Anything else is a waste of time and money. And no, it is not secure against spooks, against spooks use fire.

@Sovereign @josh dban was made into a cli tool called nwipe and it's included in that, you'd want an updated live environment for better hardware support (SSDs and stuff mostly)

@PalePimp @josh The irony of this is dev/urandom is excruciatingly slow. Faster less waste of time solution: linuxglobal.com/quickly-fill-a-disk-with-random-bits-without-dev-urandom/

@Bucka @josh That is from 2012, /dev/urandom has been significantly made faster in more recent kernels and my understanding is that /dev/random is what is considered slow as it blocks while it replenishes entropy, while /dev/urandom doesn't block if it runs out of entropy.I'm not an expert on this, I use /dev/urandom extensively at work to wipe drives and the factor that affects wipe time more than anything is the size of the drive itself.Usually if one is concerned about minimal security in the erase process whatever it takes is not a problem, after all it is an unattended process.I'm open to better suggestions if you know of one🙂

@Bucka @josh And turns out there is even a tool to do this more efficiently now without having to use dd in the coreutils package called "shred"gnu.org/software/coreutils/manual/html_node/shred-invocation.htmlIt does even allow one to use for example a poem (or any file or random block of data) to overwrite files or drives.

@josh Don't pass disks unless they're significant value of the PC. SSD for boot costs nothing these days.
