@xianc78 If I recall correctly, around 10 billion is when we start having a shortage of farmland to grow all the food. We could do more farming with the space we have with vertical towers and aquaculture but that would require a much better educated workforce than we currently have picking crops. There's also the problem that our current system of farming depends massively on petroleum byproducts as fertilizer, which we will run out of faster with more people.We could probably sustain 5 billion indefinitely with renewable resources but we're burning through nonrenewables at an impressive speed and can't actually replace their role with current technology. It's not going to collapse in my lifetime, but in 100 years people are going to suffer due to our infinite growth mindset.

Ya man, I get that part. The big problem is, not many people are going to be okay with living in Siberia, the Gobi desert or, the Congo. Greening deserts takes time and reliable infrastructure. So, the demand for well established places to live is higher than, rugged wilderness. There's a lot of factors in real estate to go into. It doesn't have to be negative.Complexity requires maintenance but there's a criticism that could be applied to any civilization. That doesn't mean it's meaningless there's a lot of meaning to it. We've gotten a lot out of expansion that would stick with us forever, just like stuff the Romans produced stuck with us centuries after.There's enough for us to grow for centuries and maintain ourselves, and discover who knows what in the process. It doesn't have to be doom or gloom, or judaism. Hitler would have agreed with me. He would never have wanted civilization to be destroyed permanently. Setbacks don't have to be failures. If we failed we would still look to the stars.
