I'm getting really frustrated about the hostility towards CWs from new users, so here are a few random points about CWs.The biggest misconception I see about CWs is this idea that they're for hiding icky bad content so normal/sensitive people don't have to look at it. CWs are for giving people more *control* over what they look at and when they look at it. It's like the difference between asking someone "hey, wanna see a cool frog?" and shoving a frog in somebody's face. (1/?)

If your argument is that people who don't like what you post can just mute or block you, you're arguing that people who don't like having frogs shoved directly in their faces shouldn't get to look at your frogs. There are lots of people who will love your frogs and want to look at them, but they want that chance to say "Yes, I would love to look at your frog!" for themselves.(2/?)

CWs also make it easier to share your content. Say I see your cool frog and I go "Oh wow! This is the coolest frog ever! I want to show everyone this cool frog!", but I know there are people following me (or even just in the same local feed as me) who don't want a frog shoved in their faces. Well, now I can't show ANYONE your cool frog because it's going to be a problem for those people.(3/?)

It's also considered polite to CW any images (or extra-long text for those instances that allow it) that take up a lot of space on the timeline. If you lived through the era of "Do you love the color of the sky?" posts on tumblr, you should understand the appeal of this.(4/?)

CWs aren't some sort of Badge of Shame among the Mastodon instances. They're a part of the local culture. We use them to be good neighbors, to make godawful puns, to give each other little surprises. That's in large part because Mastodon was built up by a pile of tired, disabled, traumatized, queer folk, and we built a space where we could engage with the world around us more easily. And then we used the same tools to be goofballs. Because that is how a human do.(5/?)

People have trauma about weird shit sometimes. I, for instance, am badly affected by Christmas stuff. Decorations, music, all of it makes me feel anxious and irritable and miserable. This is because of Reasons that I'm not sharing here. Is there anything inherently Bad about Christmas? No. Should people enjoy the holidays? Yes! Do I appreciate it when people CW Christmas stuff? EXTREMELY.

And circling back around to engaging with things, but on your own terms: I'm also badly affected by talk of parental abuse, especially abusive mothers. However, I want to read about these things, because reading about them helps me think about them and feel less alone. I just need that moment to look at what I'm getting into and decide for myself to get into it.(7/?)
