3. Through all of this my granddaughter stayed on a good path. The past three years she has worked, played sports and maintained her grades in school. She has a great group of friends.She is wise beyond her years and worked hard to defy the odds she has had against her. When she called me today to tell me the news about the acceptance I cried. It’s been a long haul but there is light for her at the end of the tunnel. She earned it.Thanks for reading.my heart is full tonight.

@Silver It can be very hard to live in a chaotic family where you are more of an adult than your parents. I am speaking first hand. Please keep close and encourage her. Also tell the truth without being mean because she has demonstrated already that she understands. Best of luck to you both!

@Silver Kim my environment was mostly civil, but there were lots of lapses due to emotional problems that drove the bad behavior. They meant well, loved us, but a revelation for me in therapy was that no one is doomed. Substance abuse is often a reaction to unsolved mental or emotional issues. I had fabulous grand parents and a community of neighbors that often spoke frankly. It can be isolating to a kid in her situation if adults don't recognise that SHE is an adult.

@Joycevor Thank you for the recommendations.She and I have had some long, productive talks. I’m very honest with her. She handles it well. She knows the problems her mom had. I’ve told her many times that she was not to blame for any of it.Someone told me the best thing I could do for her was to answer the phone. So true and obviously goes deeper than that.Her dad wouldn’t let her go to a therapist. Fortunately she had a great guidance counselor who took her under her wing and helped her a lot.
