I walked from Anhalter Bahnhof to Potsdamer Platz (close to former inner Berlin border again). I continued with S Bahn to Nordbahnhof. #BerlinWalks

My goal was the former lab of Lise Meitner and Otto Hahn.

@MolecularXtal Did Fischer have a lab in the same building?

To clarify: this was Meitner's first lab in Berlin! Actually, it was Plack's lab and she had to go in via backentry. The main discoveries were then made in Dahlem in today's Hahn-Meitner-Bau.

@skepteis looks very much like it. I am not completely sure if Fischer was there from 1892 to his death. 😅 At least, he was in Berlin during this time.

@skepteis i guess, we might be able to fins out from publications or knowledge about location of Chemistry labs in Berlin 😅

@MolecularXtal A bit too much. While I like the science, I strongly dislike the man.

@skepteis yeah 🙈. It's in the last chapter. He was in the building from the start of its existennce. The book ends 1906-7ish, i.e. nothing about Hahn/Meitner which arrive a few years later. Before Hessische Straße, the Chemistry labs were in Georgenstraße 🙃

@skepteis this document clarifies it: he was there until he died https://www.gdch.de/fileadmin/downloads/GDCh/historische_staetten/Historische_Staette_Berlin_2017.pdf

@MolecularXtal Yeah, his history is fairly interesting from start to finish. But he's also one of the many, many examples that convinced me to stop naming things after people or put up their names or statues 😬

@skepteis Agreed. Similar with Haber.History in Berlin and Germany is never really nice tbh. 🙃

@MolecularXtal I think it generally extends to almost everyone. I mean reading Meitner's Wiki Article, I'd also not want to name things after her or Hahn 😬

@skepteis I read some of her letters to a friend during this time. Yes, she supported the war. I am not saying she was universally good or she is an idol. She is a historic figure that helped understanding nuclear fission and she was one of the first women in the field. That's what I am saying.

@MolecularXtal It's why I'm a big fan of giving monuments, prices, etc. for concepts rather than people. My favourite example is here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monument_to_the_laboratory_mouse
