One thing I truly love about #Mastodon is that people are still replying to things I posted several days ago. This is a fundamental difference compared to that other site. But WHY is this important? Because it reduces that creeping need to post ALL THE TIME in order to stay visible. (Another toxic side-effect of most social media platforms). By not having an algorithm disappearing your content, it encourages your content to be focused more on quality, not quantity.

@killyourfm I think you’re right. Mastodon promotes quality over quantity, and I think it is the only way Mastodon will grow.

@killyourfm I just had this hilarious scene in my head where some overly ambitious influencer mentality person joins Mastodon and starts twooting (see what I did there?) like a peacock (heh!) and gets comments like: “Hey, excuse me, really nice content flow here, appreciate your thoughts but would you mind keeping it down a little?”

@killyourfm It is hard to decide how long I should keep the content up. I have been deleting my tweets after about a month. Here on Mastodon, I set the purge time to 3 months. But if conversations are meant to carried on for days, I should set it to 1 or even 2 years.

@killyourfm this is a really good point. Something I do like about Mastodon is there doesn't seem to be any game-playing. People are posting stuff because they want to share or discuss, not because they're trying to go viral or define themselves by number of followers or likes.

@DrMathsPhysics I'll admit, now I look back on many of my posts at Twitter with disgust. Because I was guilty of it. Conditioned. My entire platform was "I'm a content creator" or "I'm a brand, please notice me." And here it's quickly becoming "Hey, I'm Jason. No agenda. Just talking about what I love. What do YOU love?"

@killyourfm @DrMathsPhysics urgh, saw someone join a group on Twitter and, no word of a lie, apologised for not being a “content creator” like they were acknowledging that made them a lesser participant. Irks me something chronic. I love that the web makes is easy for *anyone* to create and publish anything they like. That is incredible. I loathe that algorithm-houses turned that into soulless churning of what can gain likes and subscribes 😣

@killyourfm I agree but as more and more people join Mastodon, we may start to see this problem arise again since there will be more content constantly being produced all the time, leading to people focusing on quantity rather than quality

@maryeffrancis @ReflectedDreams COMPLETELY different. Twitter is now the stressful office where you're blinded by the billboards outside and deafened by the shouting. Mastodon is your cozy living room and everyone's polite.I believe these two images speak volumes. (And note that I have 20,000 less followers here!)

@neilgall @killyourfm Glad you found your way here then! 🙂 Welcome! And yes, I think this will also happen on Mastodon soon but I’m certain, most people will eventually realise the huge benefits of decelerating. And they will also learn that they won’t gain followers or attention by being “noisy” rather than by being inspiring, insightful and innovative. #noAlliterationIntended

@killyourfm Hmm, I'm wondering why you think that is? Because the start page in Mastodon is consisting of the newest post as they are posted.Naively, I would have said that such a timeline invites to post more and more because otherwise people don't see you. Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on this!

@killyourfm In that regard Mastodon kinda reminds me of the good old forum days. It‘s really a breath of fresh air and fills a void that has been left by the reconditioning of friends and strangers alike by social media and its funky timelines.

@killyourfm I think @Mastodon fills a void between the idea of Reddit's ranking of comments by popularity and the idea of micro-blogging of you-know-which site. By design, you tend to type interesting stuff, but unlike Reddit, not to make your comment stand out but to generate engagement with yourself through it. The comment/toot is not the goal, you don't get imaginary coins because of it. You get people talking to you about what interests you both. Much more rewarding.

@killyourfm I feel like this is partially true. Your content DOES disappear buried under the most recent one in the local timeline where people tend to just see it scroll. While on the public timeline, what you say applies more, watching it scroll is an exercise on impossibly fast reading so people instead search for hashtags.

@killyourfm There are so many important aspects of not having an algorithm. I realised one when I repeatedly got to the end of my feed... that they're not drip-feeding content to get people to doom scroll. It's one of the main reasons I prefer Mastodon.

@killyourfm the article helped me a lot to understand why I don't like most of social "networks" (actually social media) and why even so I was spending time on them: it was the algorithm working to grab my attention and it worked many many times! But I don't go to any of my social "networks" for friends anymore. And since this is your living room, thanks for having me here. Hahahaha

@ravensview In my view, it tends to be both. I wish there was some data to back it up, but I think discovery from hashtags is a HUGE part of it. And then if something gets a reply days down the road, it sort of restarts the conversation.
