Whenever people search "alternatives to Mastodon" they find lists like "Awesome Fediverse", Fediverse.party, etc which exclude Soapbox on purpose for political reasons. We've tried getting added to those lists to no avail. We have an SEO problem. So if you're looking for a way to contribute, simply creating resources that include Soapbox would be very helpful.Soapbox is powering some of the largest sites on the Fediverse, and so far word-of-mouth has been effective. But we still shouldn't let them silence us in that way.

@polarisera In Pleroma/Rebased the local limit and remote limit are individually configurable. Remote limit is 100,000 by default, before it starts truncating posts.Mastodon does a similar thing, but both limits are hardcoded and are lower numbers.

@alex @polarisera Doesn't sound that good, might result in lots of spam. Emoji reacts are organic on servers that support them, they have the separate box in frontend and notification type that can be selectively muted. If we do a fallback like this for servers that do not have them, it will just result in lots of messages that clutter the thread and do the exact opposite of positive PR.

@alex @polarisera the frontend version is displayed on older versions of husky (some poast users have builds mid way through 2021 based on the soapbox build version)the bots show it, for example graf_ebooks will show you it's posting from "graf_ebooks", same with pixelpix and others. would be neat to add it to the actual website because one of the best things about twitter was bullying people for using shitty devices

@alex @otso It might also be because of the main page. When you open up some instance, Pleroma-FE shows either the public timeline of the server or TWKN. On Soapbox, there's nothing but the barebones login page. Having it show what's going on on that server, like Missky does with its last posts feed on the right, would make it much less dull and more open to newcomers.

@alex I don't think there is any way to avoid what you call "The Great Mastodon Wall", and that includes the software at both sides of the wall, Soapbox, Pleroma, Misskkey, etc vs Mastodon. You know very well how those "tech journos" will slander Soapbox and Pleroma using a guilt by association fallacy. Probably another good way to let newcomers know about options other than Mastodon is getting in their hashtags ( since they love them so much ) like #TwitterMigration and #Introduction and so on. It won't convince the most ideologically invested to abandon a slow-as-hell bloated software as Mastodon, but it might work in the most open minded to choose better options for single user instances like Pleroma or Soapbox.

@otso @alex Exactly the grievance I was describing, Soapbox right now isn't friendly to newcomers and lurkers, you can only access timelines and users through direct links. Mastodon at least has a large "See what's happening" that sends you to the public timeline, and I think there's more than enough space to put it on that page in Soapbox.

@ryan Do you mean server-to-server? It's impossible to guess the fronted from a user agent, but in federation we still use "Pleroma" for Rebased. It wouldn't surprise me if some people are blocking that on the nginx level.
