       I wonder if it would work to have a local verification system on Masto/Fedi. Like an account of a well known person can be given the thumbs up by instance moderators and people could decide based on the credibility of the instance whether or not that person is who they say they are.The verification process could be more flexible then, maybe a phone call, or in-person meeting might be enough to have someone verified, and are who they say they are.

       @ChrisWere That is to say: To me, an account is an account. I've never met you. To me you're not Chris Were, you're ChrisWere. I don't have any particular person outside of this that I wish to associate with whoever your handle represents.And in the event there's someone on a medium, for example the fediverse, that I know from a different context, for example through a different medium, then they can simply provide me with that verification out-of-band (i.e. through the other medium).
