🤔I think it would be cool to see resource usage accounting for my handle. Sort of like a carbon footprint, but for letting me know how much I'm costing the admin. This might be hard to do accurately without full analytics, so an estimate would be fine. This might inform how much people donate to patrons etc.E.g. am I costing my admin 50c a month? Or $30 bucks? If I donate $100 a month, how many users would that support? That video I uploaded was more expensive than everything else I did! Etc

@mekkaokereke I did see one admin with ~20k users say their hosting fees were around $200. So that'd be 1 cent per user??

@hal @mekkaokereke Here are some prices from the hosting company that I think #Fosstodon uses:https://masto.host/pricing/The standard tariffs only go up to an estimated 2,000 users, at a cost of $89 per month, but the price per user scales up much less than linearly.

@markusl @hal Yeah, but one of the people on that page is @aral who has a toot and wrote up some stuff on his individual account costing about $50/month.And another clue is that they're currently closed for business for setting up new instances.I think the rough estimate might not be sufficient. Maybe more granularity is needed. Or maybe their estimates may have assumed lower user connectivity from before the #twittermigration ?

@mekkaokereke @markusl @hal The burden on a server seems to be a function of how popular individual accounts are on a wide range of instances, combined with how active they are. So it’s not easily possible to tell by the number of accounts alone. The design of the protocol also sadly has Big Tech biases and favours fewer larger instances rather than many smaller ones. Running the flagship instance means Eugen optimises Mastodon for the exact opposite use case as mine, with my instance of one.

@mekkaokereke @markusl @hal So what I mean to say is, Mekka, if Google wanted to Gmail ActivityPub, they very easily could. And maybe, sadly, that’s exactly what needs to happen for folks to start thinking smaller and not unthinkingly adopt the fundamental design (and thus the success criteria) of Big Tech if what they’re actually trying to build is Small Tech. That said, at least Mastodon is AGPL so any embrace, extend, extinguish play would have some dev costs involved beyond fork + extend.
