In looking at feedback from folks trying to leave #Twitter for #Mastodon, I see a lot of confusion. This comment summed it up pretty well:"I created an account in Mastadon and was greeted with an empty feed and no clue how I was supposed to find anything I wanted to see. It's very user unfriendly. There's plenty of third party apps so it doesn't have to be that way, they could provide help to find stuff, but the official app is very unfriendly."Something the community needs to figure out.

@tilvids Totally empty feed is case possible only on fresh, single user instance. If user join existing instance, at least local timeline should be not empty.

@miklo I've explained this a few times now, and recommended that people search for topics they're interested in, find people saying interesting things about that topic, and then following them.Completely understand the IUE on this one though, especially coming from Twitter. It's a jarring first-impression, and one the Mastodon community should think about to see if there are any healthy ways to work around the "problem".

@miklo @tilvids people are so used to corporate algorithms driving their experience they get confused and even hostile when presented with a more DIY approach.

@tilvids the official mastodon app doesnt help either, atleast on android. Most of the tabs dont show up anything, including ones like "hashtags, tending, news". Having tabs that stay empty give a very wrong impression about there being no activity on the network. If I hadnt discovered Tusky, and discover my own instance feed there, and find my twitter follows, I was about to quit myself.

@SiR_GameZaloT Yeah, I actually joined Mastodon under another account years before this one, and left almost immediately because "nobody was there". I only joined our #tilvids account because our community kept whining at me to do it. 😂 Obviously very glad I did, because once I figured out what was going on, this platform made a lot more sense, and I have incredibly engaging discussions here now.

@tilvids ive had more conversations in a week on #Mastodon than Ive had in months of #Twitter. And ALL of them nice, lol. Glad Im here now. Hope it takes off 🤞🏻But they do need to fix the official app because its really turning a lot of people away.

@tilvids ...so, I'm quite new to #Mastodon. But I've been social on darn near every platform going all the way back to the days of USENET in the early '90s. The first tip I've been sharing when I've seen the question asked is to start poking around hashtags. It seems to me that a great onboarding experience would immediately push a person to select 3 of their favorite topics, hobbies, fandoms, etc. (to follow). That way, it's not "Home Alone."

@tilvids Really just sounds like they expected everything to be fed to them when they could just find everything they're looking for and more if they used a search bar or explored local and federated timelines. You can only hold someone's hand through so much. Starting new on Twitter or any other social networking platform doesn't tend to give you everything you're looking for right out of the gate, either, so I don't empathize with this complaint much.

@ChrisPirillo I was actually going to suggest exactly this, but it's been so long now since I signed up for Mastodon that...I couldn't remember if it actually did this or not! 😂 But yes, if this isn't already done, it should be. The "empty feed" is a really jarring experience, especially for people coming from Twitter. This is a pretty standard IUE/onboarding experience for apps, and I think it might help new users that are having trouble figuring out how to get started with Mastodon.

@tilvids @ChrisPirillo Thankfully if you sign up with one of the other apps, you can get recommended profiles from your instance owner suggested right in signup

@eposvox @tilvids ...see, I don't think it should recommend users, necessarily. Maybe the admin, sure. Or mods. Otherwise, it becomes a popularity contest. When you follow hashtags, it's egalitarian.

@ChrisPirillo @eposvox Emphatically agree. The last thing the Mastodon community needs is to replicate the popularity contest of Twitter. You're never going to avoid people eventually gaining an audience because they're doing cool stuff, and that's fine. But to at least get people started on an even level and make it more focused on the content.btw good to see you here, always enjoyed your YT videos. You should consider doing something with PeerTube. (if you haven't already, that is)

@Akiko Yeah, I wouldn't want to change fundamentally how Mastodon works at all. This can be solved with some pretty lite onboarding, for sure.

@tilvids i think de-emphasis on the federated timeline, especially in the official iOS app, is a major mistake IMHO

@MasseR @miklo Well, the strategy I suggested probably works best when you have a home instance with a lot of people. If you're self-hosting, probably you'll have to find some other instances to follow first, before this works for you.

@tilvids Here's what I would like to see:1. Ask them for a bio2. Ask if they have an account with public posts elsewhere (birdsite,FB,insta etc). If so, scan the posts for the most commonly used hashtags.3. Ask them for subjects/hashtags they're interested in. Start by suggesting tags found in steps 1 and 2.4. Follow those hashtags and suggest known users to follow who post those hashtags the most (known from any federated instance).Boom. Timeline + follows based purely on their interests.
