To this extent I'm really interested to know how the age breakdown of people on the #Fediverse. On one hand it would seem to make sense to me that most people here remember the "old internet" before the centralization and they're here to rekindle that flame of independence. On the other hand the youths are generally pretty up on this whole technology thing. I grew up on the internet and since then smartphones have become even more ubiquitous. (Please boost for reach)

Several weeks into the #TwitterMigration it seems clear to me the value of Mastodon is not that it is a Twitter replacement, but that it is a gateway technology to decentralization. Mastodon has flaws, I'm not claiming it's perfect, but many criticisms I've seen stem from expecting centralized services from a decentralized structure. It's up to us to try and explain the differences and set expectations for what alternative services can look like.

@mcneely absolutely this. The components of the #fediverse for microblogging(Mastodon, pleroma, Akuma) are not drop in twitter replacements, and for the most part, it is by design.They are software made for a microbloging experience different from what the birdsite is.

@mcneely Hey welcome to the fediverse (we call it the fedi). A couple things,Mastodon is just a software suite that utilizes what is known as the ActivityPub protocol.There are other microblogging software suites that can interact with Mastodon as well, like Pleroma, Soapbox, Akkoma, Fedibird, Honk, GNU Social, to name a few. Some work as backends, others as frontends, some as both.There are also other tools that can interact with this protocol, like Write Freely for blogging, Peertube for video sharing and streaming, Funkwhale for music streaming, etc. These all can be run as independent servers, but can still talk to (federate) with the known network.Also a big point of contention here is federation. While some seek to defederate and form their own little echo chambers, I am of the camp that believes we should all federate regardless of our beliefs and opinions so that there is more open discourse and dialog and less echo chambers. Of course if you need to, there are tools on mastodon and others to help you moderate your timeless and filter content.Plus I'll include this meme I made, cheers m8 and welcome!

One thing I've found is that kids aren't as good with technology outside the guardrails as you'd expect.People mistake "good at using the ipad" for being good with technology. Then the button they always press doesn't work and they're totally lost as to what to do next. If we want to have a next generation of technologists, we're going to have to work to make sure kids are getting a solid foundation of technology early. My next book is going to be a sort of introduction to computer technology wrapped around an introduction to programming, I'll probably use it later to help my son get into computers properly. You know, back in my day computers came with manuals and massive nerds could sit and read through the manuals!

@mcneely i wasn't on the internet before centralised services were common, but i never liked them or spent much time on them in the first placefedi is much more comfy, i wish there was something as usable as fedi for chat as well
