Platforms like #Twitter, #Facebook, #LinkedIn etc are all business that NEED to grow since we, the user are the products. Revenue should not be a goal of a social platform, there are enough websites out there already who squeeze you for every penny in some form.The internet wasn't created for profit alone but it seems many have forgotten..Let's bring that back! :fediverse:

@stux @beholder20 I don't mean to be s**ting on anyone's parade. It clearly is working in many instances. I'm more trying to have thoughts / start conversations on expanding the ways we do it, because I think some additional options are going to be necessary for really explosive growth.

@stux I've always thought it funny (and not in a ha-ha way) so many people didn't realize the users are the commodity on those sites. Mastodon is such a breath of fresh air. @stux In my opinion, the problem isn't companies trying to make money. After all, we all have to contribute and make a living somehow.The problem was (and to some extent still is) the intentional lack of transparency in how the transaction works. First luring us in with free access, to then capitalize hard on our grown dependency.I believe there should always be a free open town square. Public domain, like roads. And also, that there can be room for paid communities, with clear transactions.

@stux agree π―. I feel like we are at the end of the #facebook era, the only people spending time there are the older generation. We need something more exciting to keep us enticed. The sheer amount of #ads on social media makes it exhausting. As a consumer Iβm happy to be advertised at/to, but itβs time to be smarter amount how that advertising takes place on #social

@feld @beholder20 @stux yeah, and I think paid instances are totally fine, and I hope others do too. I'm really interested to see if that actually takes off / works out. I certainly hope that free / donated stays viable and maybe even the majority. Free access is obviously important.

@stux in fact, the Internet wasn't created for profit at all. It wasn't until the U.S. congress decided to open it up for commercial business in 1988 that profit even came into the picture. The research and knowledge network running on TCP/IP was known as "The Internet" since at least early 1978. If you go even further back to the ARPANET days, the public service ideals were even higher...

@stux It at the very least is the *type* of business that theyβre running: make the investors rich(er). Itβs the sort of βnever enoughβ mentality that is extremely dangerous. Itβs not like a group even of hundreds or thousands of people are deciding to make a βthingβ, care about user experience, and saying to themselves that theyβre making enough money to support themselves and operation.
