@HikaTamika depends on several factors. that being said, i don't recommend mastodon for single-user instances

@HikaTamika to go more into detail:first and foremost, you can get a vps for as little as $5 a month.with regards to software, if you wanna go ultra-cheap, honk is the way to go, although it’s (intentionally) minimal when it comes to “extra functions”. though, it was created with single-user instances in mind, at least. (and it has had the option to edit posts for ages, too.) it’s definitely the most lightweight out of every fedi software out there i believe. you can also easily run it on something like a raspberry pi if you have that. also, custom character limits.if you need more functions, pleroma is pretty good for single-user too. it’s very customizable on the user side and is much more lightweight than mastodon. i’ve been running it for years now and there’s pretty much nothing that i’m missing. also pretty easy to run on a raspberry pi, especially when single-user. adding custom emojis is also super easy (you can add packs) and unlike mastodon has no file size limit (though they won’t federate to mastodon if they’re over 50kb which is poop. obviously mastodon’s fault though). and custom character limits here, too. and custom frontends!!misskey is also really great and has a lot of features, including several you wouldn’t expect (games?? rooms?? i mean it’s neat but expected?? not at all LOL). it had a surge in popularity recently due to some factors i won’t get into, but i do really like it! i believe custom emojis have no file size limit here either. just like pleroma, it’s very customizable on the user side, as well. not sure you can run it on a pi though, haven’t looked it up. and again, custom character limits.if you really want to run mastodon for some odd reason, i can recommend glitch since it supports markdown, custom character limits, and some other neat stuff. do note that there’s no way you can run it on something like a pi, mastodon is a resource hog. the backend is way too complex for what it is.upstream masto sucks and i recommend it to nobody, let alone for self-hosting, let alone for single-user instances. it’s literally the only fedi software out there without a customizable character limit, even though it’s super easy to code (several pull requests have been rejected bc “muh vision” ok_gargamel.jpg). and like i said, it’s a resource hog, which means you’re probably gonna have to pay more.

@HikaTamika oh yeah, and there's domain names and stuff. if you wanna be super cheapo i guess you can just use freenom lol though it does come with many caveats, i personally prefer a relatively cheap registrar (i like porkbun)
