@mowgli@infosec.exchange @kebokyo@mastodon.sergal.org if you want to call it that, sureit’s basically an unnecessary and badly designed replacement for XMPP. XMPP’s only real problem is the lack of good and accessible client software.

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @piggo@piggo.space @mowgli@infosec.exchange @kebokyo@mastodon.sergal.org a lot of the anti-XML sentiment seems to be informed by the suckless/cat-v cult that just hates everything that doesn’t work with their software minimalist aesthetic. a lot of hot air with little practical justification, imo

@mia @lanodan @kebokyo @mowgli Every time I had to work with XML it's been a headache, especially things like SOAP and SVG and everything around namespaces. I agree that plain XML is probably fine and better than JSON in some ways and JSON-LD in AP was a mistake

@piggo @mowgli @kebokyo @mia XML is a weird thing to tame and I can understand that, after all extensibility is a hard thing to grasp for some people. And SOAP is a torture tool, do not eat SOAP.

@mia @lanodan @piggo @kebokyo @mowgli always found it funny when projects are like "json is so much less bloated" and then continue to install 100 deps that reimplement xml featuresthis post brought to you by the jsonschema crate

@piggo @mowgli @kebokyo @mia XML is definitely the best format for a protocol like XMPP, at least when compared to json or something boutique, but what's really awful is how it insists on representing the entire TCP connection as a single stream object, which basically means you end up trying to parse invalid XML during the stream negotiation phase

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @piggo@piggo.space @mowgli@infosec.exchange @kebokyo@mastodon.sergal.org @mia@movsw.0x0.st SOAP is funny.I had to once deal with SOAP, in Python. The most used library for SOAP in Python has some magic where it fetches the protocol description and then creates a magic object that has appropriate methods, and you just call them as with a normal object. The methods of the API we were talking to were in Lithuanian. So that was the only time where I legitimately used non ASCII characters in code that were not in a string.

@mowgli @piggo @mia @lanodan it’s almost like requiring a full recompile of your program in order to change any setting is not very user friendly

@lanodan@queer.hacktivis.me @kebokyo@mastodon.sergal.org @mowgli@infosec.exchange @piggo@piggo.space it’s a perversion of unix philosophy. instead of making your program do anything at all to solve real problems, you foist all that work off on the user, then act all smug about your “flawless” code

@mia @piggo @kebokyo @mowgli Which kind of makes me wonder what the average sucklesser feels about Plan9.Because while I wouldn’t describe Plan9 as user-friendly, it’s very friendly to being poked around via the plumb IPC system, sockets, virtual filesystems (/proc comes from Plan9), … As well as modified, a lot of it is just shell scripts, like something between a third and a half of the commands are scripts.Heck, imagine if dwm’s statusbar would have like… polybar levels of updating+interactivity: http://man.9front.org/1/bar
