Alice Coachman -- who became the first African American woman to win an Olympic gold medal when she won the high jump competition in 1948 -- was born in 1923. The fifth of ten children, Coachman grew up in Georgia where she was denied access to athletic facilities due to segregation. Not to be deterred, Coachman contrived makeshift jumps, and practiced running on back roads -- barefoot. She also resisted persuasive efforts from her parents to participate in more 'ladylike' activities. She began competing during high school and regularly set records. Once in college, Coachman focused her sights on the Olympics. Despite her skill, she was unable to compete for many years, as the 1940 and 1944 Olympics were cancelled during WWII. Qualification for the 1948 Summer Games in London led to her incredible 5' 6 1/8" high jump -- earning her historic gold medal.Coachman has since been honored with membership in eight Halls of Fame, and during the 1996 Atlanta Games was honored as one of the 100 greatest-ever Olympic athletes. In speaking to the New York Times in 1996 about setting such a record when the south was still segregated, she said: “I made a difference among the blacks, being one of the leaders. If I had gone to the Games and failed, there wouldn't be anyone to follow in my footsteps. It encouraged the rest of the women to work harder and fight harder.”

@Blackgendermoderate She worked hard for what she had. Nowadays, blacks are crying oppression and telling everyone how impossible it is to succeed, despite having ridiculous concepts like affirmative action and diversity quotas so prevalent in modern institutions.
