So if you DON'T KNOW @evan let me give you some context.The fediverse really went through three eras, as I see it. The OStatus era, the great fragmentation era, and the ActivityPub era.If you used "GNU Social", that was StatusNet originally, and it ran OStatus, both of which Evan was largely responsible for. Evan also built the precursor to ActivityPub, the Pump API, and ran the Social Web Working Group, where ActivityPub was standardized!He's been absent for a while. I'm so happy to see him back!

@evan @cwebber and Status.net came after identi.ca and the laconica server ;)

@jwildeboer laconica was part of the OpenMicroblogging standard, predating OStatus... that right?I think I was on all implementations of the route from identi.ca to here - laconica thru Mastodon. I started hosting a personal StatusNet instance when the "fragmentation" happened, then a GNUsocial instance, then - when it became necessary to move to Mastodon - I decided I didn't want the overhead of self-hosting that anymore.@evan @cwebber

@thelovebug @evan @cwebber Yep. ActivityPub is the result of a long journey, filled with lots of experiences and lessons learned. Which is why I find it amusing when folks say it's a new protocol that has to prove its merits ;)

@jwildeboerarchive.org tells me I signed up for identi.ca in 2008, which I think was the year it launched. Twitter launched in 2006. So yeah.@evan @cwebber

@thelovebug @jwildeboer @evan @cwebber 19 June 2008, @evan came into our IRC channel to announce this:16:14 <evan> Argh, just rolled out new software, so I'm a little nervous16:14 <evan> OpenID login on http://identi.ca/(Timestamps are UTC. IRC nick changed, because he jokingly used a rather...blue anagram of his name.)Once he added OpenID, I started using the OpenID server at work to log in, and started using it.I kind of make oblique reference to this in my bio.

@thelovebug @jwildeboer @evan @cwebber Namely, identi.ca was popular among a very specific subculture, and at the time we thought most online discourse was going to remain that way. I gave up on federation and used twitter because of Black Twitter and LGBTQIA+ Twitter and Disability Twitter and Road Safety Twitter. I never *really* cared much for GNU/Linux Twitter outside of a few bright stars.

@thelovebug @evan @cwebber Yep. https://ostatus.github.io/omb-spec/OpenMicroBlogging-specification.html - and also worth mentioning for historical purposes: PubSubHubbub (PuSH). I should write a blog entry on my outsiders view of the history of ActivityPub.

@jwildeboer @thelovebug @cwebber OK. Make sure to include OStatus coauthors @walkah and @brion and Zach Copley, as well as upstream protocol authors like @bradfitz (PubSubHubbub) and @jpanzer (Salmon) @blaine (Webfinger)

@evan @thelovebug @jwildeboer @cwebber My first post on identi.ca (under an old name) was on 02 July 2008, which means I was on the fediverse right at the very start!It said “suddenly Twitter seems all closed and evil” and I stand by my opinion from 14 years ago.
