My hopes are slowly dying with me. I clearly can't afford a property for a proper homestead. Boomers have taken this from me. But I'm not getting any younger - if I ever am able to afford some good acreage, I'll be too old to enjoy it.I think I'll have to settle for suburban hell hole. Surely I can become *a little* self sufficient on 1/4th acre... Maybe I can find a way to be happy on a suburban homestead. It has to beat owning no property, right...?

@Tepid_Tapir Well, homes are easier to get loans for over bare land and any good size acreage takes a lot of work and money on the maintenance alone, even without gardens or a field. Realistically a packed 1/4 acre garden alone would take significant time to maintain for 1 person still working another job but it'll give you a bunch of food and it's satisfying no matter what scale you do it at. If you look past the suburbs of wherever you're at maybe you could find a couple acres with a small house on it.

@Pisek Trust me I have been. I think with COVID these properties are extremely sought after now - everyone wants space now in fear of the Coof. I don't even live in an area that's highly coveted like rural Oregon or Maine, yet the prices are insane and this is AFTER the market has began to cool down.I have legitimately considered building a small metal shack on some land, that would be cozy af. There's a few issues though. Anywhere within a few hours drive of my job is prone to hurricanes, so the structure needs to be able to handle those winds or I could die. There's also the concerns of flooding - less likely to die from it but it will ruin my homestead and kill all my plants and livestock. Don't get me wrong I absolutely could make my land deal with huge floods and I can build something to withstand strong winds, but to do it from scratch I simply don't have the money for. I've tried budgeting it out in several different ways.I'm just so pissed at several different moving parts that are all seemingly fucking me over.

@WoodshopHandman I've been looking at places specifically that will allow me to have sheep. I'm actually not hitting much issues there unless I'm literally searching in the city. Once in a while i find HOAs but i can nearly sniff those neighborhoods out most of the time. The problem lies that I can't afford the properties that would make responsible sheep owning possible. Either floods or is smol

@Bulletsandbourbon @WoodshopHandman It depends if you want full graze, partial graze, seasonal graze, phase grazing, or minimal graze. It will also depend on the quality of pasture, which sometimes relies heavily on the area's soil.Even with minimal grazing I still need to give them ample space to roam and perform natural sheepy behaviors. They are strictly flock animals as well so I should have multiple too. I would probably only need 20 SQ ft to physically house a single dual breed sheep, but would need something closer to a quarter acre of pasture
