Here's an idea for how #mastoadmin can handle confirmations. Admins can see if the account signed up from an official e-mail, so we could host a confirm.instance.tld site where we simply link the confirmed accounts back to their profile. Same old trick that we're already using to confirm personal accounts via our personal websites and blogs. It's one small step because right now we have news orgs posting on public instances so it would help to have some level of confirmation.

@stemid This isn’t really better than the existing verification though, is it?

@matt it's exactly what the existing verification does, but on an instance level. the existing verification verifies that you have a connection between a website and your fediverse profile. but what I'm talking about is a verification from the owner of the instance that you are whatever it is you are. in my case an account from an official news agency.

@stemid @matt Why not a TXT record instead?

@selea can we use TXT records in mastodon profiles? I'm only going on what we can use in our profiles today.

@stemid I mean, if we want to verify ownership of a domain/website - a TXT-record would be sufficient imo.I know that it does not work at the moment, but that would make the process simpler.

@selea there is always a better solution but I'm trying to be pragmatic here. news orgs are getting accounts on public instances and sharing news. this is an immediate problem that requires verification. of course in the long run they should verify their own profile but until they do we can employ this relatively simple workaround.
