One bit of advice that I wish I'd been given earlier is: Get an inexpensive black 'n white laser printer."I don't print enough to have a printer!" one might say. And it's true, one might not print enough to have an /inkjet/.My experience with inkjets was that I'd get one, print something, and then by the next time I had to print something the cartridge was dried out (or pretended to be) and I ended up having to go to Kinko's anyway. Then buy another print cartridge that would be dried out by the next time I needed to print something.Got a laser printer and the one time a year I need to print out hardcopy, it fires up and Works no problem.

@faoluin I have a Brother HL-L2340DW . You need to install a special driver from the manufacturer to get it to work under Linux, but other than that I can't really say anything bad about it.

@Azure I can 2nd this, having an ink jet printer was a constant hassle, ever since switching to a laser printer I've had no issues.

@logan That also works, if their systems aren't too locked down.

@Azure @faoluin I have an HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw. This is one of the rebranded Samsung printers. It was a huge pain when I first got it; not only did it not want to print or scan without proprietary drivers, but it locked up regularly. After I updated the firmware, it became pretty great; no more crashes, and good IPPe and ESCL support that make it work out of the box on (mainstream) Linux.

@Azure Here's a fun fact: Around back to school time you can get a Brother laser printer from pretty much anyplace that sells office supplies for about $30 during back to school time, and it's, for all practical purposes, a HP LaserJet 3 but instead of a JetDirect module it has an ethernet/wifi card strapped to a SBC running CUPS.Literally something so simple you just say "Generic PostScript Printer" and give it an IP if all else doesn't work.
