I started a tool for Mastodon users who run their own small instances: https://github.com/Anthchirp/mastodon-defederate allows you to load server blocklists from larger instances so you don't have to do all the moderating yourself.More features on this coming over the next week or so. My aim is to add importing/syncing with your personal instance, so you can keep your timeline free of nazis without lifting a finger.#fediblock #mastodon #mastoadmin #mastoadmins

@markus i understand the benefits of automation but this type of moderation should really be done by humans, in my opinion. too many servers have ended up blocking other servers that were blocked on another instance for personal beef and such and that would just propagate endlessly.

@phoenix that's right. If you want to write a paragraph about the downsides I can add that to the readme?

@markus @phoenix That every server makes its own rules and moderation decisions is often cited as one of the biggest advantages of #fediverse but tools to blindly copy blocklists eliminate it entirely. It leads to re-centralization and once someone's instance gets on a single blocklist, it can close down, basically. Even if it was just a mistake or personal dispute. There's no recourse or way to appeal. And it's impossible to contact every server and ask them to stop blocking it.

@markus Automated blocking creates it's own kind of problems. See email spam server lists.I operate my own instance and have no need to block users or instances as I simply don't follow bad users.

@ls @markus Same here. But now our instances can be automatically wiped from fediverse with a simple tool. 👍With spamlists you at least have ways to get removed from it again.

@ondra @markus this sums up my thoughts pretty well, though I wouldn't say it's impossible to get removed if the instance admin provides external contact information; it's not easy, though, because you won't find out your instance is blocked until one of your users stops being able to contact their friends. Then when you send an email to the other admin it might end up lost in their inbox. I think this is a situation that can just be avoided entirely by the instance admin doing things on a case by case basis.Just worth thinking about! Even just a warning such as "It might be worth going through another instance's blocklist manually instead to avoid false reports." would help prospective instance admins to put it into perspective.Thank you for at least considering it!

@phoenix @markus I should have said "practically" impossible because it might mean thousands of such emails...

@markus Quick question looking at the readme: How do you import the list?

@skepteis That's not supported yet. I have an idea (well, someone else's idea) on how to do this, but it's quite hacky, and I'm currently working on something that might be a bit less jacky.Hence the "expect over the coming week or so" bit

@markus Great to hear. For me, this is the biggest pain... Anyway, thanks for the work!
