Is there a way to send to a list in the default interface? Or in advanced interfaces? Like, if I want to send family photos just to people I've marked "close friends and family".

@evan I think, what you basically do is mention them in a message and send it as "mentions only".Mastodon is very basic, it doesn't support Aspects/Circles as Diaspora did. Would be good idea though.cc @Gargron

@drq @Gargron OK. I think if a server can handled distributing to followers only, it should be able to handle distributing to a list, too. I'm going to put it on my list of things to think about as I learn about this platform.

@evan It's not terribly different from what you had with GNUSocial, I think.Minus groups. But @Gargron is working on this. You are working on this, Gargron, right? Right?

@evan @Gargron (please say yes, I've been waiting for groups for years, I've had enough messing with the bot and having others do the same)

@drq @Gargron Neat! There's a pretty good schema for group management (create, delete, join, leave, update) in ActivityStreams 2.0.

@evan the way I’ve always imagined this working on fedi is:1. Circles are defined by account; don’t do lists, curating people is weird. Do an alt account, instead!2. But some “circles” are defined collectively, and those are just like mailing lists; join an instance as a foreign account, subscribe to the local feed & post into that instance as your foreign identity.I don’t think (2) exists today in Mastodonland, but we’re not far off? @darius?

@blaine @evan @darius the previous fediverse stack (gnusocial) had groups defined with an ! prefix that were relayed across instances. https://laemeur.sdf.org/gs/group-index.html

@KevinMarks @darius @evan @blaine I find the way that one submits to IndieWeb News to be pretty neat as well, basically having it be a shared global category that people can tag their posts with and through WebMention notify the site that a post has been added to its category: https://news.indieweb.org/how-to-submit-a-postI guess it depends on what part of a “group” one wants: Access control, notifications/mentions, collecting similar posts.Tag + following of tag = kind of group?

@voxpelli @KevinMarks @darius @evan absolutely. The challenge with the tag model is that it’s permissionless, but many communities have very intentional membership. It’s also a bit cumbersome and almost certainly unreliable to scope by putting a little text string in a message.

@blaine @voxpelli @KevinMarks @darius @evan The folks over at @bonfire have been doing some interesting work. They've built permissions/circles functionality into their modular/extendible activitypub server. Also theres the federated social network imvestigations/dev work that @mike has been doing for many long years. #Zot protocol had permissions baked in from the beginning
