After months of research, thinking and planning we have finally ordered everything we need for ventilation and heating system for the house. Its a huge relief for my brain. I really hope I didn’t screw things up too much and soon we will get to enjoy warmth and fresh air in the house.

@muppeth Oy!! I didn't realize you still don't have that going yet. Hope it arrives soon. Isn't it getting pretty cold over there?

@PresGasWe are still living in the caravan next to the house. We are planning to move to the house to one room for winter as it will be more efficient, warmer and cheaper to heat it with electric heater we use in caravan. But need to finish toilet and few things first. The whole ventilation/heating system took long time to figure out. We are installing mechanical ventilation system with heat and humidity recovery. In that way we dont blow out of the house warm air and pull in cold fresh air from outside. All those things need to be researched, we need to get all the parts together, plan the whole installation etc. I hope I did it right and the ventilation will work as we expect it to work. With heating we went for heat pump but availability is crazy. We had to do proper hunting as waiting times for them we like 1year. We did manage though so in few weeks things should arrive and we can start installing. Until then electric heater should do the trick given we move to the house soon. Caravan insulation is so bad you can feel cold creeping in the instant you switch the heater off.

@muppeth Heat pumps and such, or some other types of systems?

Yes. Primarily air-water heat pump to power floor heating and on the upper floor we are going to do water wall heating (so same as floor but on the wall). Additionally we plan to add ground heat exchange for the ventilation, which would pre-heat the air coming into the house. We also plan to get solar collectors or dedicate solar panel array for heating water. Haven’t decide though yet if to go for solar collectors or solar panels so if there is people around with experience, I would love to read your opinions and suggestions.

@muppeth You all definitely strike me as folks that either have already discovered this gem or need to see it.https://solar.lowtechmagazine.com/

Yes this one is awesome. @antilopa was the one that found it. There is few quite awesome ideas I hope to test once the building phase is over and experimental one is on :) I am very much interested in ideas on energy storage as this is pretty much still unresolved issue. Having small piece of land around the house I am privileged to experiment with stuff like compressed air storage for example.I do love the esthetics of the site too, and I an inspired by the idea of low solar power hardware as a platform to host stuff.

@muppeth My personal experience with heat pumps is that they should be configured to cool in summer, not just heat in winter. My apartment becomes warm because of the heat pumps in summer. For solar water heaters they work well in Spain. @piotr can speak more about experience with solar water heaters.

Ours will have that option and since we use floor heating it is possible. I do rather hope that ground heat exchange for ventilation will do the trick though. It should cool the air in the house to the levels that are comfortable and does not require extra energy to operate. In spring-autumn we hope to get most of the hot water from the house from either solar panel array or solar water heater (still didnt decide which to go for). That would reduce the need for power quite a bit. I would love to get warm water in the warm season for “free”. We plan to do some experiments with that and for example build a buffer tank of 1000l in the ground outside the house so that we can store hot water produced during sunny days for longer to account for those days without enough sun.

@muppeth @piotr I should photograph the solar water heating installation a garden centre has set up, for you. It's quite nice, and they have finally almost completed the work.
