Been giving this a lot of thought. If this Fediverse deal is going to be sustainable, there needs to be a *lot* more instances with <1,000 accounts. Ideally even less accounts per instance. And perhaps it would be even better if single-user instances were the norm.

Thinking about this more: we don't need "scale". We don't need instances with 1 million users in a giant data center. What we need is everybody to spend $5 on a super tiny instance.

Thinking that we need to prepare for 500 million Twitter users is a trap. No, we don't need some VC to provide his funding. This isn't an insurmountable problem.

Half the web runs on self-maintained WordPress installations. The Fediverse sure as hell can run on self-maintained instances too.

@atomicpoet aside from better social dynamics of tiny instances, doesnt it just bring the problem just one level deeper down the stack?More tiny instances, more need for managed hosting, more need for mastodon-instance hosters and then specialising and converging to a couple of big players? Hosting the majority of tiny instances?

@joeldebruijn Maybe? But I don't think development of the Fediverse should stop with the server/client paradigm. The end goal should be running stuff on your own hardware.

@atomicpoet Self hosted WP sites can, at most, send PingBack/TrackBack requests to other blogs. There's no federation to speak of, so the power they have, and the responsibility, is minimal. But when you're talking social networks, the potential for bad actors - or even just clueless actors - to negatively impact others is dramatically higher.

@lisardggy I don't know—I think people overestimate the work instances take. If you keep number of accounts small it's easy. What's important is: 1. The rules are clear 2. Enforcement is consistent 3. You make your presence known

@atomicpoet But isn't every server an relay that stores toots/media from all the user connections? So eventually the 5$ budget wont cut it?

@tero_ojala The network uses such minimal resources, that's not even a concern. I'd show you a chart, but that takes too much work right now.

@atomicpoet love the idea. Is it possible to install an instance as easy it is to start your WordPress website on a rented server?

@JoYo @atomicpoet Only if every other instance is small... our struggle the past week has been incoming traffic, and we are staying well under 1k users.

@thegibson @atomicpoet I've noticed that, any ideas why?I think h.t has a higher ratio of active users than most but that's just my intuition.

@JoYo @atomicpoet Alos, yes, we are noisier that most servers... which is a good thing. we have a very high active user ratio.

@thegibson @JoYo @atomicpoet I’ve been thinking of spinning up an instance, if masto.host ever opens up again, just to mess around and see what the (non-system-administrative) aspects of instance admin looks like firsthand.

@thegibson @atomicpoet maybe we need to start rate limiting the too big to fail servers.

@atomicpoetThe problem is there's all these new users coming over (from Twitter, yes, but also Facebook and other places because Mastodon is going viral), but not many people who have the means and time to run their own instance. I say this as someone coming from a new instance with 8 users whipped up a week ago. Running and moderating a server well is a commitment, especially if there is any intent to open it to more than just trusted friends and family.

@atomicpoet But Pleroma doesn't copy media/toots to its own storage? Is it only redirecting users to other instances?

@atomicpoet Like my instance has collected 20gb of media in five days and thus is helping other instances with their load.If every instance is only 5$/month, the diskspace is going to run out fast.
