Another reminder of why I'm slowly ending my reliance on streaming #music platforms like #Spotify. Three Fish is a post-grunge band featuring Pearl Jam's Jeff Ament. Very dark, mellow, and poetic. I bought both their albums in the 90s (I tracked down ANY #PearlJam side projects at the time!) and ripped them. Good thing, because they don't even exist on Spotify, which I discovered when trying to include one of their songs in an upcoming mixtape this morning. Long live physical media.

@killyourfm You can get better experience than Spotify with Plexamp. You run their server (Plex) somewhere, e.g. if you have a NAS setup at home, and then just stream the music from your phone/other computers.There are other similar systems, such as Roon or Navidrome.

@killyourfm I still rip/pirate stuff. I have TB filled external drives, backed up. And that’s *with* paying for subscription streaming services and buying digital music. Music would just disappear without it. Also Three Fish was good.

@killyourfm I’m a big fan of music streaming services mostly for discovery. I have found far far more artists and genres than I ever did in record shops or in the shadier days of Napster & Morpheus. But I still have a big stack of ripped CDs that never turned up on streaming & regularly keep an eye out in charity shops for those gems (particularly older dance music DJ mix albums) that never found their way to streaming.

@killyourfm I tried Apple Music, Google’s one , and some others and absolutely none of them come close to Spotify for discovery. Though I would like to see Spotify stop over-engineering their service and app. They’re not a “podcast” platform! The amount of UI bloat is silly now. Remember years ago they used to be held up as a shining example of how a tech team works? Then how no one really talks about that any more 😅

@wiredfire The bloat is about to get worse with their introduction of audio books. And the UI is just terrible these days. On a related note, I highly recommend "The Playlist," a (fictionalized) docu-drama about the creation of Spotify. It's on Netflix. Swedish language, but of course various subtitles available.

@killyourfm I ditched streaming services and now have my@own plex server. They have a feature called Sonic Adventure where you pick a two track and it takes you on a journey from one to the next via tracks that progress from similar to the first eventually getting to the second.

@killyourfm I don't mind Spotify to just go through discographies. But they sometimes lack albums. The sound quality is also far from great. I bought the new Blind Guardian via Bandcamp and the difference is massive. And my hearing is terrible at the moment.So long live Bandcamp!

@killyourfm I really don't think your wrong. I have the same thing. Just listen to the new Blind Guardian on Spotify and then the digital version. Obviously one is mp3 and the other flac but it's night and day imho. Even the mp3 from Bandcamp sounds much tighter and somehow more dynamic range.Maybe it's all in our heads hahaAlso, thanks for promoting mastodon you're the reason I'm here.

@killyourfm Back in 1988 I had a tape of Metallica's Master of puppets album. It was a pirate copy, as I was living in communist bloc and there was no official copies. I remember I've made album cover by hand with color pencils. I shall search for it in the attic of the family house somewhere in the dust

@mlabowicz The way it's supposed to work is: if I've shared my Plex music library with you, you should theoretically be play it from that link. If not, you can play it from the streaming platforms that PlexAmp lists. It's a work in progress though, they just released the feature last week.

@killyourfm True. I find annoying not being able to add those darker side projects songs into my lists. That's why I made a group in telegram where I uploaded some songs I used to have in my iPod, to listen to when I'm tired of the usual stuff in Spotify.
