Kettle has died, researching Instant Hot Water Dispensers. Kmart one looks quite good, but on "Low Stock" so not keen to drive into town and find that means No Stock. Any recommendations?

@64 @Rexpanse will be less efficient as it's keeping a volume of water at dispensing temperature all the time rather than for the couple of minutes before you want a hot drink. Unless you're making hot drinks literally all the time. Could be improved if it was on a timer so it turns off at bedtime and wakes with you.

@jay @64 Nope, not the ones I'm looking at. They heat up the amount you want at the time.

@jay @64 Hmm, maybe keeping it at a somewhat elevated temp, but all the Energy Saving sites including the US Dept of Energy (not manufacturers) say 50% plus energy savings in any case.

@Rexpanse @64 Yeah, makes sense, if it takes 2 mins to boil a normal kettle using 2.4kW of power, then this one taking even 30 seconds (assuming the 5 seconds advertised is for the smallest cup at the lowest temp) to do a full 98 deg tall cup will be way cheaper.

@jayUsing NZ 220V 10A mains you're never going to boil a 300ml cup of water in under 45 seconds, even with a 100% efficient, zero mass heater.@Rexpanse @64

@vik @jay @64 Got the Kmart one last night. It's definitely keeping the water heated. I assume at 25C, given that is the lowest temp you can choose from the dispensing settings.

@vik @jay @64 FYI, I love it, particularly the lower pitched pumping noises for a few seconds vs the long duration high pitched kettle noises (migraine brain). The 90yo was befuddled, but I have labeled the buttons so he should now understand the order of operations (2 buttons to press), so we will see how that goes. Mr Engineer is disappointed the Aeropress doesn't fit directly under it, but otherwise seems happy enough.

@64 @vik @jay He can build/3d print a custom plinth for it if he cares enough. Or I can, if I do, of course. The drip tray is detachable, so no fuss jacking it up. Right now he's using a spouted Pyrex measuring jug to transfer from dispenser to Aeropress. I expect any mods will happen when FIL has decamped to the backyard granny flat in a few weeks and we don't have to worry about more befuddlement.

@64 @vik @jay We've just held a household maker conference and we will CAD and print a plinth for easy Aeropress access and greater domestic felicity

@64 @vik @jay Argh. Mr Engineer found the temp too cool for his coffee. Tested it and it was coming out at 63C when set to 98C, so yeah, WAY too cool. Temp seemed fine last night, so not sure what's going on but no interest in fiddling about with it. Will return and ponder the larger Westinghouse option at Harvey Norman or new kettle *sigh*

@RexpanseIf you know anyone traveling back & forth to the UK, ask them to get a kettle. Pommie kettles run at 2.8kW@64 @jay

@vik @64 @jay We have a very stylish gooseneck stove top kettle, but distracted people tend to let it boil dry. Not that has ever happened to either of us...

@vik @Rexpanse @64 all standard NZ power points are rated max. 2.4kW. You'd need to have a 15A plug top wired on, and have the kettle's socket potentially rewired (depending on what else is on the circuit) and changed to a 15A.

@jaySeeing as I can plug a 2kW kettle and a 2kW toaster into the same socket, and the horrible things people do with 4-way boards, I strongly suspect using a UK kettle on modern wiring in a single socket is not a practical problem. @Rexpanse @64

@vik @Rexpanse @64 I will err on the side of regulatory caution when talking about electricity, as (a) it's rather dangerous, (b) not every house has modern wiring, and (c) insurance companies will look for any way out of paying a claim.
