@Cara @moffintosh let me focus on a microcosm of this which i was reminded of very recently; sewage. human waste, gathered together, is generally considered 'bad for the world'. however, the water that powers our sewage systems has to be released back into the world.so, what we do is we process it - boil it, treat it with chemicals, and so forth. by doing so, it can be released back into the world. it is safe to say that this is a very _expensive_ process

@kallisti@refusal.biz @moffintosh@berserker.town I guess that would depend on what kinds of chemicals and whether they stay in the water we put out or with the waste we move further into other things, but generally I think yes for both

@Cara @moffintosh aye, aye!see, human waste is actually quite nutricious! not for us of course, but for plants and such - full of nitrates. the issues waste causes is that it causes algae to overdevelop, choking things out. its not that its toxic, just that its too much of a good thing!

@Cara @moffintosh so, what do we do with it? we make the fact that it's too nutricious work _for us_.there are two ways of doing this! you have obviously heard of composting, wherein waste is broken down naturally with the aid of worms and bacteria to produce a nutrient rich 'topsoil' (which is created naturally thriugh the decay of dung, dead plants, fallen leaves, etc). we can then use this compost to grow plants more! the overnutrition is transformed into a useful product

@Cara @moffintosh however, dung in water produces algae, yes? what feeds on algae? carp! you can make a fishpond fed off your dung. aint that a treat! when the pond dries up, the carp have produced a rich silt at the bottom, much akin to compost. the dung is gone, you've got fish, and you have compost! win, win, win!

@Cara @moffintosh so, what does this have to do with cars, aye?cars are an example of our industrial seweage treatment. they work against the world! a car cannot support itself; it needs roads, it needs oil pipelines, it needs a global supply chain, it needs manufacteruer specific parts, else it simply becomes nonfunctional

@kallisti@refusal.biz @moffintosh@berserker.town been a while since I heard anything about this, but I think a problem with overpopulation of water vegetation was that it threw off the concentration of things like oxygen to the point that fish and almost all flora species couldn't survive it... if so that would stop the carp from feeding on it and cutting the population down... we'd probably have to keep a very tight balance on how much we feed those, and I'm not sure whether we can figure that out...

@Cara @moffintosh hey, hey! you're getting ahead of yourself.yes, that is exactly the problem! the water vegetation (algae) overpopulates. the solution is the carp - the carp breathe air (not submerged oxygen) and they eat algae.how do i know this works? well, munich did it, hanoi did it, Calcutta did it!we figured out the numbers: > Then, fish are stocked in another pond, and slowly sewage water is introduced into the pond at a sewage-to-water ratio of 1:4.and we figured out how to make it productive:> The Kolkata fish farms provide 8000 tons of fish per year to the city, or 40% of the region’s fish production. It processes 80% of the city’s sewage, and reduces the nutrient and organic loads of the city’s sewage water by 50-90%, while keeping bacterial loads to an acceptable level under WHO guidelines. It is calculated to save the city an equivalent of $64,400,000 per year in sewage treatment costs

@Cara @moffintosh both the cars and the seweage treatment come from this single idea: we are apart from our world, not a part. to make cars work, you have to reshape the world. why not build something that takes advantage of the world that exists, rather than something that needs to tear it to shreds?

@kallisti@refusal.biz @moffintosh@berserker.town I can see that point actually, yes... Makes sense.I imagine the question following this is how much 'unnatural' actions to our surroundings constitute an overreach, and what are we trading it for - we mine and build an industry around computers, and without how robust our supply chain is, including trucks and such, I can't imagine so many people could reasonably have one...I suppose in that way I can see the peaks of our society as being outside of nature...Doing big things like this in a better way is always something I'll be enthusiastic for, but for the time being the positives might still outweigh the negatives, or so I hope. And it is certainly very good to have people thinking of your point when creating new things...

@Cara @moffintosh alright, so, fermentation originated as a form of food preservation. food rots. there's no way to avoid this. there are many ways to slow it down, or alleviate it to a degree, however!one such example is a fridge. a fridge serves to delay the inevitable - it creates conditions in which bacteria grow slower (less moisture, cold).another example is drying food, which eliminates moisture entirely. however, there's an entire third category - fermentation! if you've ever had pickles, saurkraut, or kimchi, they work in a very special way. fermentation is accepting the fact that food rots, and using it to your advantage. rather than trying to deny the decay outright, you simply encourage a certain type of decay, and discourage another. a bit of vinegar, a bit of salt, and suddenly rather than a mouldy cabbage, you have saurkraut! the only type of bacteria that grow in these particular conditions for fermented food are ones that are beneficial.now, we use this process for a LOT more than just cabbage and cucumbers. fermentation goes from simply preserving food to creating entirely new ingredients and foodstuffs that last longer than the fresh stuff - soy sauce is fermented!
