I'm calling it now. Corporate Mastodon instances will arise as a way for easy proof of identity for corpos like @wendys@social.wendys.com

It always comes down to DNS. This is also how gov entities will probably also provide easy visual validation with things like @potus@social.whitehouse.gov and @warning@social.weather.gov

@redlilrascal @kamenrunner There’s a cautious “let’s see”. If someone here *wanted* to follow, say, Wendy’s, then that doesn’t seem inherently awful. This is a loosely held opinion; I’m persuadable.

@tek @redlilrascal @kamenrunner I'm personally past the phase where I would be following _typical_ brand Twitter... but if a USL (soccer league) instance popped up and I was defederated from following Detroit City FC, it would be a dealbreaker personally. That said, not all corporate entities are equal in that regard and I could see some that are worth blacklisting on sight.

@tacoman_x86 @tek @kamenrunner things like sports and entertainment brands make sense, hell i wanna see what the next sony state of play is saying, but i feel like things like wendy and mcdonalds... theyre not providing any information theyre just advertising via memes.

@redlilrascal @tacoman_x86 @kamenrunner I see that point. But today I see that as opt-in advertising. If you really love, say, Subway, and you want to follow them to get the occasional coupon, fine. And we could always silence them so that you following them doesn’t make their toots show up in the federated timeline.

@tek @redlilrascal @kamenrunner That, and the algorithmic bullshit on Twitter that forced that stuff onto your feed without your consent was half of what made it so onerous. There's no quote-tweet riffing here that breaks filters. No ad space. No posts that were only liked showing up as if they were posted by somebody.Posts from a brand on fedi just wouldn't affect things the same as they did there, I think.
