       @tilvids Mastodon and other ActivityPub apps have this concept as well. I think it is a good idea

       @gregandcin @tilvids fwiw i've already got a workflow that is similar to this. i treat the registration emails as a todo list of accounts to check out and either like be aware of a new friend or delete some spam. in my experiences instances that don't do this are where the spam comes from, i haven't had serious issues with local spammers.

       @scanlime @gregandcin It's challenging, as #tilvids has grown in popularity, so has spam. I'll often get a dozen new user requests per day, and that's only increasing. I run the instance as a part-time thing, so I don't really have time to manually touch base with every person who registers, and the checks in place right now really aren't doing enough to prevent the spam accounts. I think a metered invite system, especially one that encourages community engagement, would be a really good idea.

       @tilvids @gregandcin it also might be a good idea to think about how to split new users up between communities of similar instances, to avoid having another mastodon.social :)
