To everyone, like me, who is new here on Mastodon -- I swear, I feel like I'm in Canada, escaping Gilead -- here are two posts by the primary developer of the platform (and owner of the non-profit that holds the trademarks etc) explaining that you should ignore people lecturing you about what you should and shouldn't post here. I now consider this issue settled, and will no longer respond to these folks. Time to embrace Mastodon! Thank you for welcoming us.

@AravosisI'm with Eugen on this but ultimately his word should be treated as no more definitive than theirs. Like IRL, what matters is what the community thinks. And what defines the community is evolving. That's understandably hard for the people who kept this alive while folks were building it and the newbies were ignoring us. Lots of competing goals. We all need to try to maintain empathy and an open mind.

@kathygriffin @rmayemsinger @Aravosis I also often get stuff like ‘politics should be CW’ed etc’ but I don’t do that. Only stuff that’s a spoiler for example and stuff you don’t wanna see without warning ⚠️

@stux @kathygriffin @rmayemsinger The thing is, decent people know what's inappropriate, or at the very least, what should be behind a CW wall. It's not like simply because we come from Twitter we'd post pics of dead bodies, racism and explicit sex (though Twitter itself seems fine with the latter two!).

@Aravosis As for CWs, it’s everyone’s own call. At the same time, anyone who objects to your use or non-use can mute you - that’s their call. Instances can have their own rules about that as well, and could even defederate instances that don’t follow them - that’s their call as well - but few do, as there is indeed no big agreement on CW usage for “mere politics” (not the particularly hot topics, where CWs are more “usual”, but just stuff like results).Let’s just all try to get along.
