@DollyCat I used plastic straws, I've used paper straws for about 6 years now. as long as you don't leave your drink sitting for a long time, they aren't soggy.

@AnneBevan Ah well back in my twenties the arthritis in my wrists and fingers was so bad I couldn't lift any cup even when very little in it so.... Used one for first time in years other day as was drinking some apple cider vinegar with water (heard it good for ya), and vinegar harsh on teeth so someone suggested on forum to use straw, so I did and works great.

@DollyCat as long as you don't store them in sunlight. I made a thread holder to fit inside a clear box (the reels and bobbins fitted over the straws, very Blue Peter) that was on a windowsill. The straws crumbled after a couple of years!

@DollyCat @AnneBevan I started using straws thinking it might help with swallowing difficulties - not needing to change position of head. It didn't. So I had them in a drawer when my tendons decided that I couldn't lift a cup with one hand. and with difficulty even with two hands. tipping it up safely was just NOT happening. Life saver. Even now my hands are a lot better than that, lifting a full cup is a hazardous thing, so keeping it level and using a straw is better.

@DollyCat I know this is meant for fast food restaurants, but for home use, I highly recommend glass straws. They last a long time (forever if you don’t break them) and are the most enjoyable to use of any I’ve tried, including plastic. The smoothness is nice and they don’t get crushed by your teeth the way plastic (or, even less convenient, paper) does.

@DollyCat @stingray We got given some bamboo straws. They smelt funny at first but after a good clean in the dishwasher they have been OK for my dad to use. He crushes paper ones and metal ones get too hot or too cold depending on what he is drinking.Dad prefers plastic bendy ones best of all. He often grumbles when I give him a drink with a bamboo straw. 😂

We figure there is so much plastic PPE being used by his carers that a few plastic straws isn't going to make any difference to climate change.I mostly use the bamboo ones to get a reaction from him and so we can have a laugh.

@macha @DollyCat those problems with the paper and metal ones are certainly true enough that they should still be able to get the plastic ones. I'm happy to change if the change works, which in this case it does for me. I throw out SO MUCH plastic blister packs from my tablets. There is no way to recycle them.

@macha @DollyCat it's quite horrifying. Superdrug started a scheme where you could drop off the empty packs in a box instore. only some branches. it very quickly got overwhelmed and they stopped it. One woman had 3monthly hospital appts near a store. So she saved up all her med packs in a bag and the staff though it was a years worth and too much, she said it was only just the 10weeks since she heard, there'd be more next time!
