many small Mastodon server owners, such as my own https://berserker.town, haven't really seen many new account registrations at all during the #TwitterMigration.people are picking the larger servers, which makes sense, because it feels like the safer choice.the drawback is that it goes against the very way this network is ideally meant to operate: we're supposed to spread out a little.why?to avoid single points of failure.to avoid monopolisation.to avoid having a select few individuals having too much power and influence.to avoid the situation we've seen playing out over the past few days where servers like mastodon.social have struggled to keep up with the huge influx of new users.

@thor I got zero engagement on mastodon(dot)social so I eventually tried a few different instances before settling with FSE (which is Pleroma, not mastodon).I was saying "I'm a neonazi incel!" (trying to get banned, or anything, just any engagement what so ever) and got nothing.Mastodon(dot)social has the @friends (cat friends) account tho which I enjoyed.I don't think mastodon(dot)social federates with anyone (everyone else is nazis) which is pretty lol.

As a trans person myself, reading the description feels mostly laissez-faire in a way that I wouldn't feel comfortable or confident on your instance for the reasons I stated. @thor I see your point, but, for example, when your instance does not promise to stand against racism, transphobia, Nazis, Fascists, et al... then people who are leaving Twitter because it's being run by a fascist bigot are not going to pick your server. I understand you're from Norway and Servers in Finland, etc....... but the Norse/Viking font is not doing you any favors when people see it as a dog whistle for Nazis.

@thor It strikes me this dynamic - smaller is better - describes the optimal situation for a number of ecosystems. Economics, in particular. #smallbusinesses, independent entrepreneurs in local markets are far better for local communities and economic justice than monopolies. We gravitate towards the one-size-fits-all monopoly, "walmart twitter" social media. I think we should explore federations of independent smaller entities in economics as in social media.

No corp limited liability, but no min wage or welfare either. No captured markets, and no labour laws. But it's not without extremes it has proven itself incapable of mitigating. Capital has no incentive to clean up the streams they pollute until no other clean streams remain. It forgets that workers are fellow citizens unless it's made to remember & forced pay them well. Democracies need to hold the reins of the mkt and ensure it works for them.
