There was also a thing where it was classified as a "supercomputer" because the legal definition of the term had lagged behind moore's law and was still based on 1970s standards.I don't think it caused them any problems, it was mostly marketing hype.

Yeah, a beowulf cluster, it mentions them in the article. Thing is it's been done before and better. I don't think PS2s are particularly powerful relative to desktops.If it were real and I were to guess why they'd do it, it'd be because they're standard. It's relatively hard to build thousands of exactly the same PC without making direct deals with the OEM. Which Iraq couldn't do because they were under embargo, all it would take is for the hard drive supplier to find out it's an illegal deal and the entire project would be sunk.But with the PS2 it was essentially a decent gaming rig produced in ridiculous numbers and the manufacturer was committed to keeping the design stable for at least five years. So even if one deal to buy some PS2s fell through the rest wouldn't be compromised and they could always get more.As to what they'd do with them... I can't think of many things Iraq could use a supercomputer for, so using them individually to run some military hardware on seems likely.
